Sunday Morning Service 8:30AM-James 5 ~ Pastor Jarrod Doyal

If you have your Bibles, James chapter 5 is where we're going to be. James chapter 5 is where we're going to be. James chapter 5 is where we're going to be. James chapter 5. We're going to finish up the book of James this morning, and the last time we looked at James, he kind of offered us what I called a slice of humble pie. He was addressing those who are particularly prideful in their nature. And to close out chapter 4, he left off

talking to us about following God's will for our lives. And I think too many times, you know, we have a tendency to make decisions without ever even thinking or asking God, like, hey, Lord, is this your will for me? Is this what you want me to do? And I think oftentimes too, people have a tendency to just live independently from God. You know, they get to this point in their

lives where they're just so well off, they're so independent, and they live independently from God and never think about, never think about, is this what I'm going to do? And I think too many times, is this what you want for me? Is, am I doing what you want me to do? And so that's where he, that's where he left us, left off in chapter 4 here. And so, and that's who's actually James

is going to address in this first section of chapter 5. So with that, let's dive in here. James chapter 5, verse 1 says this,

Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness in the last days. Look, the pay that you withheld from the workers who mowed your fields cries out, and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of armies. You've lived luxuriously on the earth and have indulged yourselves. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous who does not

resist you. James starts out here in verse 1 saying, Come now, you rich people, weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you. Seems pretty harsh. However, if you're like me, I like to know the whys of things. Like, why is James addressing rich people? That kind of thing. So let's first clarify who he's actually addressing here, who he's talking to.

Is James addressing believers? No. Through this whole book, if he's addressing believer, he addresses them as brothers and sisters. Brothers and sisters in Christ. And he goes on to speak directly to them. He makes it pretty clear in his letter who he addresses by calling them either brothers and sisters or not. So we know this section is addressed to unbelievers,

specifically those who are wealthy. And Matthew Henry's commentary even suggested this, and I think you kind of agree with it, that this was aimed particularly, at worldly unbelieving Jews who made their wealth off the backs of Christians, many of whom were condemned and killed in their love and pursuit of monetary wealth. So this first section is specifically addressed to wealthy unbelievers, particularly those who have gained their wealth primarily through the love of money and dishonest gain. So why is he picking on this group of people here? That's the why.

Why is he picking on this group of wealthy people? And he calls on this group to weep and wail now. Weep and wail now over their judgment to come. That's their judgment. What is their judgment that's coming? Verse 2 says, Your wealth is rotted and your clothes are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded. And their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire.

In other words, guys, their wealth is rotted. He's going to eventually go away. Their clothes are going to be moth-eaten. He's going to go on to accuse them of storing up treasure, earthly treasure, in the last days. And in verses 4 through 6, he tells us that they have made dishonest gains at the hands of believers and even murdered them and persecuted them, all in the love and pursuit of monetary wealth. That's why James is picking on

these wealthy unbelievers. That's why he's specifically addressing these people here in the first section of chapter 5. That's the why. And understand the Bible doesn't say, it never says that it's a sin to be wealthy. That's not what the Bible says. In fact, in 1 Timothy chapter 6, it tells us that it's the love of money that is the root of all evil. That's where we start to have problems. Jesus, even in

Matthew chapter 19, verses 23 through 24, it tells us that it's the root of all evil. It tells us that it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. He's specifically addressing someone who loved their money more than anything else. Okay? These wealthy unbelievers were essentially persecuting

these believers, these brothers and sisters in Christ, all in the name of monetary gain. They withheld their wages. They lived indulgently and luxuriously, and they persecuted. These believers. And it goes on to say that their cries, the cries of these believers have reached the ears of the Lord of the armies. He goes on to say that there is a judgment coming

for those who are like this. There's a judgment for them. What we need to understand is that there is a day coming when all that wealth is going to go away. All that wealth is going to go away. So much so that Revelation 6 tells us that a day's wages is going to buy, is going to go to buy a loaf of bread. For those who live life thinking they don't need God because they have more money than God. Got news for you. It's going to get ugly

here pretty soon. Life's going to get very ugly. All that money that you amassed, that you gained by dishonest gain, is all going to go away. You're going to be left with nothing. You're going to be essentially homeless. Then that's the earthly judgment. You're going to be left with nothing. That's the earthly judgment that's coming. Now if you come to the end of this life and you still

refuse to believe, guess what? There's another judgment that's coming. And it's going to be far worse than anything you'll ever experience on this earth. So that's the warning, okay? That's the warning that James gives us, gives to these unbelieving wealthy people here. But there's also good news. And the good news is that you don't have to go through that judgment, okay? Jesus

stands ready and waiting for you to believe and follow him. Amen? Amen. Verse 7. Therefore, brothers and sisters, be patient until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and is patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains? You must also be patient. Strengthen your hearts because the Lord's coming is near.

Brothers and sisters, be patient until the Lord's coming is near. Brothers and sisters, do not complain about one another so that you will not be judged. Look, the judge stands at the door. Brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the Lord's name as an example of suffering and patience. See, we count as blessed those who have endured. And you've heard of Job's endurance and have seen the outcome that the Lord brought about.

The Lord is compassionate and merciful. And in this next section here, it starts out with the word, therefore. And the rule is, is that if you see that word, you always have to ask yourself, what's that therefore, right? It's a sign that you need to go back and reference the previous section of scripture in order to be able to interpret this current section in context.

So therefore, because Christians suffered so much, because our brothers and sisters have suffered so much at the hands of these wealthy unbelievers, Romans, even the Jews, specifically the wealthy unbelieving ones, he tells them, tells us to be patient until the Lord's coming. James shifts his focus from the wealthy unbelievers to the brothers and sisters, to the believers. And he's saying, because you've suffered so much, be patient because the Lord is coming. It's interesting because even in the first century church, they, they felt the eminency of the Lord's coming. They knew that he was coming again.

And they felt that it was coming. They, they felt that it was coming again soon, just like we do today. And he gives us a command to be patient. Why? Because the Lord is coming. He is coming. When? Well, I don't know. No man knoweth the day of the hour. No man knoweth the day of the hour. Then, well, then how do we know he's coming back? Because he told us he would. He told us he would. So what do we do in the meantime?

We wait patiently. It goes on to say, see how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and is patient with it until he receives the early and the late rains. You know, for those of you who work on farms or are farmers, you know, do you plant seed and then immediately give up the day? The next day, because the rain didn't come or the seed didn't sprout? No, you don't.

The farmer doesn't give up on his crop the day after he plants. He keeps waiting. He keeps praying. He keeps doing what he does. He keeps waiting, knowing that the life-giving rain that God provides is going to come. He knows that the rain is coming. And he knows that there will be a harvest. In his timing and not ours. You know, the scriptures are just chock full of verses talking about waiting, being patient.

And it's kind of hard to pick out just one, to be honest with you. But Psalm 27, 14 says this. It says, wait for the Lord. Be strong and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the Lord. I'll say that again. Wait for the Lord. Be strong and let your heart take courage. Wait for the Lord. Guys, I know the waiting is hard. You know, and it seems like the Lord is never going to come.

Sometimes it seems like he's really silent and is not working in our lives. And may I just say, that's the enemy talking. Just know that the Lord is coming and the Lord is working. You know, I was thinking about when I was studying for this, I was thinking about this. Between the Old Testament and the New Testament, I was thinking about this. I was thinking about this.

New Testament, there's a gap of about 400 years. And during this time, the Lord did not raise up a single prophet or speak and move in any really what we would consider like a major way. You know, not like he does in the Old Testament. But does that mean that the Lord was not working? No. In fact, the opposite is true. The Lord was at work. He was working that entire time. He didn't

take a day off. During that time, he was setting up all the different kingdoms of the earth that would eventually lead to the rise of the Roman Empire that was present during the time of Jesus. So you see, it wasn't that God wasn't working. He absolutely was. He absolutely was working. They just didn't realize it. When God is silent in our lives and when we have to wait,

understand it doesn't mean... It doesn't mean that he isn't working because he is. He's working behind the scenes. You just need to be patient. You just need to wait for the Lord. And if you're like me and you're waiting for his return to take us home, and trust me, I'm ready. But we need to be patient. Okay? We need to be patient and understand that he is working. He's setting everything up

so that he comes and takes us home to be with him. In the meantime, just need to be patient and keep doing what God has called you to do. James says way back in chapter one, he says, consider it pure joy when you experience trials of various kinds because you know the testing of your faith produces what? Patience. Yes. Some of your translations say endurance,

but another word for that is patience. Verse nine, it says, brothers and sisters, do not complain about one another so that you will not be judged. Look, the Lord stands at the door. The judge stands at the door. Excuse me. I think the temptation when we go through these trials, when we go through these seasons of waiting, when life gets difficult, is to kind of start complaining about one another.

And I think that that was the temptation for these believers here. I think that was a temptation for these believers. Their life had been made extraordinarily difficult at the hands of the Romans, but also by the hands of their own people. Their life had been made extraordinarily difficult. And I think James knew that they were starting to grumble and complain about one

another. And I kind of imagine it like they were in the South, kind of like low key, like passive aggressively, like insulting one another. When I worked at the county, I was kind of in this boat a little bit. We'd hired a couple of people in our department that just, bless their hearts, they just made life a lot harder than it really needed to be, you know? And there was just, there was a couple of

times I just kind of wanted to look at them and be like, you don't really let common sense hold you back, do you? You know? And there's been so many times where I wanted to look at them and go, look, I don't have the time nor the crayons to explain this to you, okay? And so, I mean, that's the temptation. That was the temptation that dealt with all the time.

We've all had that one person, that co-worker, or that brother, and sister in Christ that that we wanted to lay that one on, you know? But James says, Don't be whining. Don't be complaining about these, about your brothers and sisters. Don't be complaining about these unbelievers either. He goes on to say that there is a judgment for unbelievers, but guess what? There's one thing I've

one for believers as well. 2 Corinthians 5.10 tells us this, and it says, for we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad. That's 2 Corinthians 5.10, if you want to jot that down in the margin of your Bible there. Listen, I know some of you guys are incredibly difficult to deal with. I'm just, I'm kidding. I love you guys. I really, truly,

I love y'all, but truly, some of us are difficult to deal with, and I'm one of them, okay? You just ask my wife, she'll tell you, right? But in these moments, may I encourage you just to be patient. Be a little extra patient. Give a little bit of extra grace, because a little extra patience and a little extra grace can sometimes go a long way, more than you know. The Lord, and guess

what? He's going to give you a little bit of extra grace. He's going to give you a little bit of extra grace. He's going to give you a little bit of extra grace. He's going to give you a little bit of extra grace. He's going to give you a little bit of extra grace. He's going to give you a little bit extra grace. You know what? The Lord has been extra patient with you. He's been extra patient

with me. He's been extra gracious with me, and praise God for that, because I'd be in a bad way if it wasn't. James goes on to say that while we wait on the Lord in these seasons of hardship, he says, take the prophets. Take the prophets who spoke in the Lord's name as an example of suffering and patience. See, we count as blessed those who have endured you've heard of you've heard of Job's endurance and have seen the outcome that the Lord brought

about the Lord is compassionate and merciful he says to take Job as an example and yes he suffered a lot we all know the story but all that suffering wasn't without purpose there was good purpose in it and through it he says that the Lord was compassionate and merciful he was compassionate and merciful in that in that there was only so much that Satan was allowed to do there was a certain line that Satan could not cross he was compassionate and merciful and through it all God sustained him God kept him alive he sustained Job during that time was life miserable absolutely 1,000 percent but he sustained him why because he is compassionate and merciful that word compassionate

here in the in the Greek is a is a word I can't even begin to pronounce and I won't even try because it's going to sound really really dumb but it essentially means just this deep compassion from the heart the way it's conveyed doesn't just mean this normal kind of compassion like oh I feel sorry for them you know that's what this means here it's a it's a deep deep-rooted compassion from the heart that really words can't describe it's this kind of compassion like the kind Jesus had when he fed the 5,000 and said that he had compassion on them it's this deep almost as groaning when you see somebody who is struggling whose life is just incredibly difficult and you just don't have words for it there's a lot of us

here this morning there's a lot of us here in our in our church family that are just going through it right now and I I have this level of compassion that I just don't have words for it's so deep there's no words that can accurately describe the kind of compassion that's that's being conveyed here and understand that Jesus knew what these believers were going through he knows the struggles that they were going through and guess why he knows your struggles as well he knows exactly what you're going through. He knows your trials and your sufferings. He knows your frustrations. He knows the pain that you're dealing with. He knows about that cancer diagnosis.

He knows all about the family issues that are going on. He knows the struggles within your marriage. He knows about your child who is in rebellion or is away from the Lord right now. He knows. He knows the suffering that you're dealing with, maybe from your past sins. He knows the tears that you've shed for your loved ones, your spouse, or your child who refuses to come to the Lord. He has this deep compassion and mercy

for those of us who are suffering because he knows what it is to suffer. And if this is you, may I encourage you, be patient, because the Lord is coming. And while we wait for him to come, keep doing what he's called you to do. You keep moving forward. Keep your eyes on the prize. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Amen? Amen. Verse 12. Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear either

by heaven or by earth. Or with any other oath. But let your yes be yes, and your no be no, so that you won't fall under judgment. James, again, here, he's kind of switching gears. And understand, we got to understand something about that culture. And they made oaths left and right. And there were two, basically two types of oaths that you could give in that day. There's a binding and non-binding.

Binding and non-binding. Binding and non-binding. Binding and non-binding. Binding and non-binding. Binding oaths were those that were made. Typically, you would swear by God or by heaven or something of that nature. And those were legally binding oaths. You could not weasel your way out of those. But the other kind of oath is you made this oath, you swore by so-and-so, such-and-such,

as long as it wasn't heaven or earth or God. It was a non-binding oath. If at some point you saw that it wasn't going to work out in your favor, you could not do it. You could not do it. You could not do it. You could not do it. You could not do it. You could not do it. You could not do it. If it was in your favor, you could kind of weasel your way out of it, you know? It was a non-binding

oath. It was sort of like crossing your fingers behind your back. James and Jesus both tell us not to just, don't make these oaths. Don't swear by heaven or by earth or anything else, but rather just be a man of your word. Be a man or woman of your word. Let your yes be yes. and you're no be no it's as simple as that don't be a liar tell the truth for some of us i know it's harder than harder than others don't be a liar and don't be a weasel

don't weasel your way out of an agreement that you made if you said that you're going to be somewhere be there if you're going to show up show up be a man or woman of your word let your yes be yes your no be no too many people today are just not people of integrity and we're called to be different we're called to be different to the rest of the world amen all right verse 13 says is anyone among you suffering or afflicted he should pray is anyone cheerful he should sing praise is if anyone among you is sick he should call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him anointing him with oil and in the name of the lord the prayer of the faith will save the

sick person and the lord will raise him up if he has committed sins he will be forgiven therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed the prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect elijah was a human being as we are and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and for three years and six months it did not rain on the land and then he prayed again and the sky gave rain and the land produced its fruit in this next section of chapter five here james essentially says if you're afflicted pray if you're sick pray confess your sins and pray when you have our forgiveness i will give up all anti- comprised of sin sin all the way up the

final part comes process it when the antique is killed and torn into understanding you know that is killing the soul from the heart theré sin sickness it is curing a sin it is restoring sin that is becomingzug when you can say let's pray today all right now let's just keep doing that until we get to the next chapter because i would like a chaplain hat in hear nしょう Будnin we have two wasn't going to do it today the mach lasting two wich and wich are with getting both involved now we have some questions already about the sure but we're going to be giving answering questions first we're going to have the third part for important questions actually Steph you don't

view. Because it seems to me that if we want to see God move in our lives, then maybe we ought to be in prayer, like a lot. You know, a couple years ago at the pastor's conference, there was a speaker there who was giving a message on this subject, on the subject of prayer. And it, I lost my place here. It came out of the book of Acts, chapters one and two. And in Acts

one, it says that the disciples, they met together. This is the time that they were waiting for the Holy Spirit. They met together, they were devoted and united in prayer. And then it goes on in Acts chapter two, it goes on to describe how the Holy Spirit was waiting for them. And it goes on to say, the Holy Spirit came down and moved mightily and did all kinds of awesome miracles and amazing

things were happening in the church at that time. And the point he was, the point he made was that if you want an Acts two type of church, you need to have an Acts one type of church, a church that is devoted and united in prayer, a church that prays. And James here is saying, if you're sick, pray, whatever ails you, pray. And I hear my heart here. Understand that God is not a genie

that we just, we go and rub the lamp, you know, and poof, what do you need? You know, it's, that's not how this works. I guarantee you, you're probably not getting that a hundred thousand dollar car. Okay. So just let it go. He's not going to appear and give you whatever you're asked for, like a little genie. That's not how this works. That's not what James is saying here.

He's saying, if you have problems, pray. If you're sick, pray and have other people pray for you. If you have sin, confess it and pray, pray for one another, pray for one another, instead of complaining about one another, pray, pray continually and pray according to his will. That's out of first John five, verse 14, pray according to his will. Guys, the longer I walk with God,

the more I believe in the Lord. It starts with, as I say back in Luke 16, verse 1, we're not just talking about Jesus, we're talking about his love and all those nice things. Yeah, the first thing I'm going to do is borrow some notes out of my Bible, because I want to have a little light on a program. I always have a little bit of a place to, lot of love in my notes, but I don't know about call five so it'll be about pray before God.

Okay. All right, so to kind of round off with my precious message. Okay. I'm going to talk about how his life pancake fell into a 99.あの, the guess, hang on one second here. Yeah. All right. Oh, I'm going to give you guys a resistive handout them. Alright? the ground and start doing chest compressions just to keep him alive. Over the next four months, I watched God take a guy who should have died that day. He should have died and bring him back.

Not only was I praying for him, but so was my family and so was my church family. That's you guys. You guys were praying for him. Guys, that's the power of prayer. Prayer. That's the power of prayer. I've watched God firsthand provide in so many different ways for people in this church. There's one family specifically that I'm thinking of here. I watched God provide for firsthand, completely out of nowhere. Several months ago, I got a call,

again, out of nowhere, from a completely random person that doesn't even live in this part of the country. They called and they wanted to provide money for a very specific family in our church that they were struggling. And the strange thing is, is that morning, I was praying for this family. I was praying, Lord, I don't know how you're going to do it, but I'm just praying that you would provide for this family. They need you. They need you right now to provide for them.

And that's what God did. And I'm not saying that I necessarily had anything to do with it. I'm just saying that's the power of prayer. Okay? That's the power of prayer. I'm saying I didn't have anything to do with it. God did. That's the power of prayer. One of my best friends from college, he's right now watching his dad die of pancreatic cancer. And one day I was praying for him on my way into work. And I was praying

for him. I was, I prayed specifically that God's peace, his presence would be upon him that day. Lord, behold, I got a call from my buddy that afternoon. And he said, dude, something crazy happened today just out of nowhere. He said, very specifically, I felt God's peace, God's presence today. Again, not anything that I did, but that's the power of prayer. Nothing that I did necessarily. It's what God did. Okay?

That's the power of prayer. James even says here in verse 16 and 17, it says, the prayer of a righteous person is very, very powerful in its effect. Elijah was a human being as we are. And he prayed earnestly that it would not rain. And for three years and six months, it did not rain on the land. And he prayed again, the sky gave rain and the land produced its fruit.

That's the power of prayer, guys. I've been on the receiving end of prayer too. About 12 and a half years ago, my wife had just given birth to our oldest, Adeline. And I was working at a monument company at the time. I wasn't making a lot. I didn't know how we're going to pay for all of this. And I knew I had about a $3,000 bill waiting for me at the hospital. And so a couple of weeks after Adeline

was born, I'd gone in and I went to the billing office and I talked to a lady. I said, hey, can we set up some kind of a payment plan here to be able to pay off this bill? And she goes, absolutely. Absolutely. So she gets on the computer and pulls up our account and looks at everything. And then she looks at me and she goes, Jared, you don't have anything to pay. Your debt's been paid.

It's been paid in full. And side note, that's what Jesus did for you on the cross. That's what Jesus did for you on the cross. He paid your sin debt. Okay. He paid it in full. And if you have questions, come see me afterwards. But back to prayer. That's the power of prayer, guys. I'm telling you. I've watched, I've watched guys, I've watched God work in so many of your lives. And it's amazing.

And I love hearing these stories about how God has worked in your lives through the power of prayer and worked in other lives. Guys, we need to be a church that prays. We need to be a church that is on our knees in prayer. He says the prayer of the righteous is powerful. Understand, I'm not righteous in and of myself. My righteousness before God is as filthy rags.

But it's Jesus who has made me righteous. It's Jesus who's made you righteous.

And if Jesus has made you righteous, if you have been made righteous in Jesus, then your prayer is powerful. And if your prayer is powerful, why aren't we praying? There is power. And prayer. I've seen it. And I believe in it. Husbands, be praying for your wives and your kids. Wives, be praying for your husbands. Pray together. Pray often. Pray for your co-workers.

Pray for your family. Pray for your unsaved loved ones. Pray for your communities. Pray for your schools. The prayer of the righteous is powerful, guys. If we want to be a church, where God moves powerfully, then we need to be a church that prays and prays continually. Amen? Verse 19. My brothers and sisters, if any among you strays from the truth and someone turns him back,

let that person know that whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

To close out the book of James here, I kind of want to just end with a quote from Chuck Smith here. He says, if you turn a brother and sister back from sin, this is where the quote starts, you don't convert him by telling him that everything is okay. That everything is alright. In other words, you don't convert them by affirming their sin.

You bring them back by giving them the truth. The pure, unadulterated word of God. We cannot affirm what the Bible calls sin. We cannot affirm what God calls sin. We cannot affirm what God calls sin. God has clearly called sin. Give them the truth. Give them the truth of God. Give it to them in love. Okay? There's, goodness gracious, there's so many, so many things going on in the world.

I mean, I can't address them all, but, you know, like there's the whole sin of transgenderism. Give them the truth of God's word. God made man and woman.

Gay marriage. Give them the truth of God's word. A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. Give them the truth of God's word.

There's all kinds of stuff in the Bible.

Give them the truth of God's word. That's what we need. We don't need to be soft. We don't need to be affirming. You don't need to be, it's okay. It's okay. Come here. No. That's not what we need. That's not what they need. They need to hear the truth of God's word. They need to hear that. Hey, man, look, I see that you are struggling with this. Can I tell you what God's word says?

If they don't know that it's sin, how will they ever know? They need the truth of God's word. Amen? Amen. Would you guys stand with me? I'll have the worship team go ahead and come on up.

Father, we come before you this morning. God, and I just thank you so much for your word, for how powerful it is, Lord God. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Lord, specifically, I thank you for my church family. Lord, I just pray that you would bless them, Lord, and encourage them while we wait patiently

for you. Lord, help us to not grumble and complain about one another, Lord, but be patient and pray for one another and to be gracious because you have been gracious with us. You have been gracious with me.

Father, I ask a blessing on each and every one of us here today. As we leave here, Lord, I just pray that the things that we take from your word would not be forgotten the second we walk out the door. But that we would just continue to meditate on your word. Lord God, that we would just continue to soak it in and allow it to work in our lives.

Father, we love you, Lord, and we praise you. And in Jesus' precious and holy name, all of God's people said, Amen.

Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now my heart and grace, my fears relieved.

Precious did that grace appear.

My chains are gone. God, my soul is gone. God, my soul is gone. God, my soul is gone. For knowing what's best for us, God, if we can only just convince ourselves to be obedient to that, to be obedient to you. Lord, I just pray that as we leave this morning, God, that you would just stay with us. That we would continue to pray with you just as we walk along through everything that we're going through,
