Father's Day Message

Ephesians chapter 1. We're going to be doing verses 3 through 14 today.

I wanted to focus on the good Father, the Heavenly Father, the only Father who is actually perfect. I don't know about you guys, but it doesn't matter how good a dad is, he's still flawed at his very best. And he's still going to make mistakes. But we have a Father in Heaven who is absolutely perfect. Hasn't made a mistake once. And every one of his plans comes to fruition

no matter who gets in the way. Everything that he has desired to do, everything that is going to happen, he has planned from the very beginning, from before the foundations of the earth. And this is the God we have contact with. This is the God we have fellowship with through his Son. And so I wanted to get into God's plan. What does it actually look like? So the book of Ephesians,

you can break it down into two different portions. The first three chapters are doctrine, the last three chapters are duty. So first three chapters, what God has done for us, what we should know about God, and the last part is how should we react because of it. Chapter four starts with,

I therefore the prisoner of the Lord beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called. So it is an employment to how you should be in reaction to God's plan. To what God has already done for you. And so the first chapter, specifically 13 through 14, I believe is such a beautiful picture and revelation of what God has done from the beginning of time.

With that being said, Paul wrote this book. It starts off with Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God. Paul being one of the apostles of God, he was previously Saul on the road to Damascus where he had a revelation of God where Christ revealed himself to him and he was no longer the same. His name changed, right? It went from Saul. If you think about it,

Saul, the first king of Israel was an arrogant man. He became an arrogant man. He thought of himself very highly and here Saul was very similar. He was of the tribe of Benjamin. He was a religious leader. He was a Pharisee among Pharisee of the tribe of Benjamin. In all outward perception, he was perfect. He did the best he could and yet his name was changed to Paul

which means little one. It reminds me of John the Baptist when he says he must increase and I must decrease. And how when God revealed himself to him by Christ he was no longer the big, high and mighty Saul the Pharisee. He was now the little one. And this little one wrote half of the New Testament. Right? This little one was the apostle to the Gentiles leading people to Christ

standing up to Rome going to Caesar and ends up losing his life for the sake of Christ. This little one is who wrote this scripture to us. To the Ephesians. And it says to the saints who are in Ephesus and faithful in Christ Jesus. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Very similar to the openings of most of his letters. Now let's go ahead and get into it.

Verse 3 says, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the world. The heavenly places in Christ. So first off he starts by blessing God the Father of Christ. This God is the same God from the Old Testament. Jehovah, Yahweh he who was, who is and is to come. This God is the Father of our King, Lord

which means King, Jesus which means Yeshua and Christ, our Messiah. So it's our King, King, Jesus, our Savior, the anointed one. He's specifically speaking of the God of this man that we serve, that we have accepted as our Savior. And then it says who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. It's a very important thing to look at

because it doesn't just mean that we're going to be blessed. It's a very important thing to look at. Because it doesn't say that he blessed us with every earthly blessing. He didn't bless us with all of the nice cars, the sweet clothes and the nice home and a sweet 401k to look forward to. He didn't bless us with financial security. He didn't bless us with everything that the world tries to get you to chase after.

Right? He blessed us with spiritual blessings in the heavenly places. Christ, if you read in the Gospels, is always trying to point the disciples to look to the heavenlies. Be heavenly minded. Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven. Stop looking here and walk by faith. Walk for what you will receive in eternity rather than what you will receive right now.

And here Paul is letting us know, letting the believer know that God has already blessed you with every spiritual blessing. Everything that you need to walk and live a successful Christian life and successful Christian life means walking in obedience to the Father. A successful Christian life is living a life of holiness. Absolute set-apartness from the world.

Not away from the world but different than the world. Counter-cultural to the world. And so God has already blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. That is a very important part and I would underline every time you see in Christ, in Him, by Him, through Him. Every time it says that. Because that is a caveat. That is a very important part

of it. That means everyone, if you want to receive any of these spiritual blessings, if you want to receive the salvation that comes by Christ, you must enter through Christ. Jesus said very pointedly, very pointedly, very seriously that I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. There is one door to get to the Father.

There is one door to receive eternal life. And it's through the Son. If you guys would flip with me to John chapter 3 verse 16. It says this. I'm going to be reading down to 21. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the

world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men love darkness rather than the light. Because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil

hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God. Here is the only way. The only way to get to the Father. It's by His Son. Believing in Him. Later on in John it says, this is the work of God, that you believe on Him who He sent.

So, the precursor to receiving these spiritual blessings is that we are in Christ. So, the book of Ephesians effectively is written to believers. It's not written to unbelievers. It's written to those who have already accepted Christ as their Savior. Those who already believe that He was, that He died and was resurrected and He rose again. It's specifically for these

people. And then it says, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world. He, just as He, the Father, chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. God already knew who was going to accept Christ from before the foundation of the world. Before, before the world was formed. Before the beginning. Before Genesis 1-1. He knew you, me, we

were going to accept Him or not. If we would or not.

And with that being said, when God makes a choice, He doesn't make a mistake. And if you want to know if you've been chosen, have you accepted Christ into your heart? Do you believe in Christ? Do you believe that He was a real person or a figment of someone's imagination? Do you believe that He really came and lived? Do you believe that He was a good teacher or do you believe

that He was the Son of God? What do you really believe?

If you do believe, God has chosen you. I can promise you that.

God will not turn anyone away. I'm going to read to you guys 2 Peter 3 verse 9. It says, The Lord is not slack concerning His promises, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance. God doesn't turn anyone away. He wants everyone, what does John 3.16 say? For God so loved the world.

He wishes that everyone would come to Him. He wishes that no one would turn away from the grace, from the salvation that is given to them freely. It's a gift. It's a gift that doesn't have to be earned. It's a gift that doesn't have to be worked for.

And if, I don't know, it's very encouraging to know that God knew me from before the foundations of the earth and He chose me from before the foundations of the earth. He chose me for salvation. He chose me for relationship with Him, fellowship with Him. That's what God wants. Fellowship with us. So, He will not turn anyone away and He has chosen us before the, and this

speaks to the omniscience of God, the all-knowingness of God, as well as the omnipresence of God, right? The all-presence of God. It speaks to the fact that He's outside of time and He knows what is going to happen before it happens, before it plays out. He knows whether or not I'm going to choose Him or not. And so, He chose us in Him, in Christ, before the foundation of

the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him. It's the blood of Christ that makes us holy, right? It's the blood of Christ that takes away the blame from us. We are clothed in His righteousness and now we can walk before the Lord in His sight, in that holy holiness that Christ gives us. It's not a holiness we can achieve on our own by a set of rules and

regulations that we set for ourselves. It's not because I, you know, don't smoke weed or I, you know, don't drink or I, it's not that. It's Christ died for my sins and He covers my sins and He paid the price for the sins that I have, that I am. And so, we have, Paul is letting them know that God has given them the holiness and the, the, with being without blame before Him in love, in agape, right?

In unconditional love. God is defined in, in 1 John 4, 8, one of my favorite verses, it says, God is love. That means God is unconditional. If you read the King James, I really love the King James version of, of 1 Corinthians 13. It, when it goes through, like, love is patient, love is kind, instead of love, it says charity. Charity being, what do you, what do you imagine

charity? Charity doing for someone who can't do anything for you back, right? Doing something without even a desire to be repaid, right? Because the person I'm doing this for, they can't pay me back. There's nothing they can do to pay me back. This is the kind of love that God is, towards us. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that me, you, or anyone could do

to, like, really pay God back, other than accept the salvation He's given to us by His Son on the cross. This love that God has for us is absolutely insane. Makes no sense.

Verse 5, it says, having predestined us, to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself. John 1, 12 says this,

but as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believed in His name, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. I love that it speaks to this, that it says, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. God is the one who has made us, predestined us, to adoption as sons and daughters. He pre-planned from before, knowing who we were going to be, knowing the decisions, the lives that we would lead, knowing our deepest, darkest secrets that we don't share with anyone else, that we would be ashamed of anyone finding out.

He knows these things about us, and yet, still predestined us to adoption. Adoption, I believe, is one of the sweetest things of all time. To stepdads, you guys are the best. I had a wonderful stepdad growing up, and there's nothing to me, it was hindsight's 2020, in the moment when I was young, I hated it. I struggled with him. I really could not accept the love that he was freely

giving to me by choice. When he married my mom, he didn't just marry my mom, he chose me and my brother. He wanted me and my brother to be his sons. He didn't force himself on us. He didn't make us call him dad. In fact, to the day he died, I called him David. Now I call him dad, affectionately. But the idea of him choosing choosing us, choosing me, choosing you,

knowing who you are before you knew who you were, knowing your heart, and he still chose you. He still chose me. To be his sons and daughters. And this was by Jesus Christ. Once again, it's by Jesus Christ. It's in Christ. Every one of these things are predicated by it being done in Christ to himself according to the good pleasure of his will. All of these things are done.

I don't know what kind of God you imagine. But if we look back in history, the gods that all of history, as thought up, think of Thor, think of Zeus, all of these gods, they're very humanistic in nature. They're very selfish in nature. Zeus came down and had a baby with a woman which created Hercules. A demigod. He was very selfish in nature.

This God is absolutely not. He delights in doing good. He takes pleasure in bringing redemption to believers. He takes pleasure in bringing people to himself. He takes pleasure in doing good for us. To us. That's not like any other God. Any God that I would have imagined. The God that I think of is like waiting for me to mess up. Constantly, even like tripping me as I'm walking forward.

And that's not him. He takes pleasure. Predestining us to adoption as sons. He takes good pleasure in that. Verse 6, it says, To the praise of the glory of his grace by which he made us accepted in the beloved. He does all of these things to reveal to us the amount of grace that he has. Right? You can't put a number to the grace that he has towards us because I know that

I would have used it all up on my own. You guys wouldn't have any if there was a number to the amount of grace that God has for us. But all of these things were done to bring praise to his grace. To the glory of his grace. To the beauty of his grace. It reminds me of the old hymn Amazing Grace. How sweet this sound. It makes me think of grace being unmerited favor.

Unearned favor. He's freely giving this to each one of us. Paul speaks a little bit more about this in chapter 2. And I would definitely encourage you to read that. But this grace that he gives it's unexplainable. It's unexplainable. And there's nothing, after receiving all of these spiritual blessings from God the Father. There's nothing else we can do but praise him for the grace

that he has given us. Give him the glory that he deserves. And then it says, by which he made us accepted in the beloved. Once again, it's through Christ that we were made accepted. It's through Christ that we were able to have a relationship with God. There's no other way. There's absolutely no other way. You can pray all day to God without going through Christ.

Nothing will happen. Nothing will change. If you have Christ in your life, you've accepted him as your Lord and Savior. Now you have complete and total access to God the Father. Verse 18 of chapter 2, it says, for through him we have both access by one spirit to the Father.

There's literally nothing getting in your way anymore. You don't have to go through a priest. You don't have to go through a pastor. You don't have to go through some really spiritual man that you know. You can go directly to the man, to the God, to the Father. And he loves you, and he cares for you.

Verse 7 says, in him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace. In Romans, it says that the wages of sin is death. We were born in sin. Paul explains this in the book of Romans, that we were born in sin because of the fall of Adam, that we were already born with a leg down, or not a leg up, but we were already born not good enough to say the least.

We weren't able to enter into eternity with God before. There was no way. Sin had screwed it up.

And Christ was the answer. That was prophesied of from the book of Genesis. Christ is spoken of throughout all of the Old Testament. All of it. The more you read it, the more you see him. The more you get to know him. But it's in Christ that the believer has redemption. And it's not a free redemption. It's not like God just wiped the price away, marked it down, you know, 100%.

Discounted it 100%. No. It was paid by the blood of Christ.

Every lash that he took, every whipping that he took, every punch that he took, to the cross that he bore, to the cross that he died on. The blood that was spilt paid the price for our sins. That's the love that God has for us. Willing to lay down his life completely. I don't know if you guys ever thought about this, but the idea of going to the cross is the most

humiliating thing. First off, if you're speaking of Jesus, Jesus taking the cross, walking in front of everyone up to the Mount of Golgotha. Everyone's around you, yelling, screaming. The Romans are getting all hyped because they love watching people get crucified.

And him walking, stumbling, broken already. And everyone just spitting at him. It's the most humiliating thing I could think of. And then on top of that, he has to go up to the top of the hill to be displayed before everyone, to his final breath before everyone. And he was willing to do that because his blood paid the price for our sins. His blood redeemed us.

It made the payment that we couldn't.

So it's in his blood that we have redemption. Which is the forgiveness of sins. All of our sins are washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ. Gone. Kaputs. As far as the east is from the west, God no longer remembers them. Because Christ's blood has washed us and made us clean. According to the riches of his grace,

like I said, God has so much grace for us, it makes no sense. His grace goes beyond just salvation. We'll see in just a bit. It wasn't enough for him to just be like, alright, you guys are good. You guys can come into the heaven club. There's more. There's more to it.

Verse 8 says, which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence. So the riches of his grace, he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence. He made all of it go towards you. Me, we, this grace. And he made this decision with perfect intelligence, perfect knowledge. He didn't make this decision lightly. Perfect knowledge and understanding.

He understood you, me, we. He understood the way that we think. He understood that sometimes we would take advantage of that grace that he's given us. He knows our thoughts, our minds. And with all of that in mind, he made that grace abound towards us. He knew man was going to fall from the beginning. Before he created anyone, he already knew. He already knew that he was going to have to

send his son to pay the price for our sin. But that was a price he was willing to pay so that he can have people who love him by choice. He could have easily made robots, right? Christian robots who just do the right thing all the time. Don't make a mistake. Who live perfect lives without even thinking about falling. But he desired to give us a choice. Because love is patient.

Love is kind. Love gives a choice. And he's given each one of us a choice. To choose him or to choose me. My question today to you is who do you choose? Who do you choose every day? Who are you going to choose tomorrow? Are you going to choose to walk with Christ in perfect communion? Are you going to choose to take a day off?

I love in the book of Joshua towards the end, chapter 24, it says, choose this day whom you will serve. Then it goes on further and it says, Joshua says, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Who are you going to serve today? Who are you going to serve tomorrow?

So God knew all of these things and verse 9 it says, having made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in himself. All of these things he's doing, which he made known to us the mystery of his will, which is verse 10, it says that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times, he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth. So the mystery of God's will is that he wanted to bring to unity those who are in heaven, all of his followers in heaven or all of his followers on earth. Right? Bring them

into one. The church in Christ, perfect communion. His perfect will. And he takes great pleasure in that. He takes great delight in doing these things for us. Things that we didn't deserve. Absolutely didn't deserve.

Verse 11, it says, in him we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will. So I previously said, right, God's grace is so much for us that it isn't just our salvation. His grace doesn't just give us salvation, but it also gives us an inheritance. An inheritance is something you can't earn.

An inheritance is something that is given. Right? Usually it's a family member, right? Usually it's, you know, dead uncle, you know, six states over that left his house to you, right? An inheritance. But here, this inheritance is a heavenly inheritance. Jesus spoke about it in the book of John where he says, I go away to prepare a place for you.

I want to read what Peter wrote about this inheritance to shed a little bit more light on the inheritance that we receive in Christ. It says, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. So this inheritance, unlike the things that we have here on earth, is incorruptible. It can't be messed with.

It's undefiled. It's perfectly clean. This inheritance that we have to look forward to is freely ours by Christ, through Christ, through God's grace.

Being predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will. Once again, predestined. The word predestined. Preplanned. He preplanned according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will. He, knows best. And according to his wisdom and his will, this is what he wanted to do. He doesn't make mistakes,

right? It already said that through his wisdom and prudence, wisdom and understanding, he made these decisions. He didn't make these decisions lightly. He knew. And so, he had already preplanned, to give an inheritance to those who enter by Christ, through Christ.

Brothers and sisters, you guys are rich. You guys are beyond, you know, Elon Musk and Bill Gates and whoever else is, you know, the rich people in the Middle East. You guys are astronomically more rich than them. You might not ever see that. You're on this side of eternity. But the riches that you will receive are so much greater than anything you can have here

today, now, even in the next 50 years.

Have you thought about that? Have you spent time really thinking about what that would look like?

What are these riches, heavenly riches, this heavenly inheritance that Paul talks about, that Peter talks about? What does that look like? My question to you is, do you think it would be worth it? To keep walking by faith to receive that? There's so many distractions going on in the world that are constant. Like, I was talking to one of my buddies the other day.

There's so many shows that just grab your attention and then you start one episode, next thing you know, it's 3 a.m. in the morning, you're done with the first season and getting ready to start season two. There's so many distractions that can pull us away from fellowshipping with God and spending time with the Lord. But I believe, if we keep our eyes and our hearts focused on what God is planning on giving us once we enter into eternity, He can help us walking in faithfulness to the Lord.

Right? We don't do good to receive grace. God gives us grace and the ability to do good. He gives us the ability to walk in the right way. He gives us the ability to walk in holiness. To talk in holiness. So, there is an inheritance predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will that we who first trusted in Christ

should be to the praise of His glory. Once again, it's to the praise of His glory. Verse 13, it says this, In Him you also trusted after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Romans 10, 17 says this, Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. So here, Paul is saying, once you have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation,

that is when you trusted in Him. Right? The gospel pointed you to Him. God reached you. You didn't reach God.

So in Him you also trusted after you heard the word of truth. In whom you trusted, in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. So, God has given you a seal, a proof of the payment of your inheritance to come in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our proof of the inheritance that we will receive when we enter into eternity.

So even then, you have the Holy Spirit in you. You got the Holy Spirit with you. You are already abundantly more rich than anyone of the world. And that is a precursor to the inheritance you're going to receive. How do you know if you have the Holy Spirit, if you have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise? Well, first I'm going to read you John 14, 27,

Jesus speaking. Well, 26 and 27, it says, but the helpers, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Do you have peace?

I'm not just talking like the absence of, you know, arguments or confliction. But peace with God. Knowing that you and God, you're like this now. You're good to go. Not because of what you did. Do you have that peace in your heart?

Then I'm going to read to you Galatians 5, 22.

It says this, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Is your life characterized? By those characteristics? Do you have those fruits growing out of your life? This love? I'll tell you the first time I experienced it because I struggled with like, I went to a Bible college where, you know, and I don't know, I heard a lot of stories about the Holy Spirit and like how wild he gets and how wild it is. And I never experienced any of that.

I never got, you know, the shakes or anything. And I was always worried whether or not I was filled with the Holy Spirit, whether or not I have actually had an encounter with the Holy Spirit. That is until I read Galatians 5, 22 and I realized that when I started, when God found me and I started walking with him, he gave me a love for everyone for no reason.

Before God, I hated everyone. After God, I didn't. I couldn't explain it. It was an absolute miracle of God.

And that was the seal of the Holy Spirit on my life. Do you have that seal? That seal that you can always go back to and look at the Holy Spirit in your life, working in and through your life to go back to and say, man, I'm good with God.

Verse 14, it says, who is the guarantee of our inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession to the praise of his, the father's glory. He is the proof of the inheritance that we're going to receive. So I would encourage you all, me too included. Well, real quick, I really love the book of Ephesians. First three chapters, like I said, doctrine,

but it's all God has done for us. What God has done before he asked you to do anything. And I would encourage you to go through the book of Ephesians on your own time and study the first three chapters and see what God really has done for you. And then try to do what God wants you to do. But this is how God works, right? He does, we react.

He initiates, we react to that.

But here, verses three through 14, we read the first 10 verses are of the salvation we receive. 11 through 12 is the inheritance that we're going to get. And then, yeah, 11 through 14, actually. But I wanted to look at what God had already done for us, right? What God has already prepared and planned beforehand. I wanted to look at how good this gospel is going to be.

This God is that we serve. This heavenly father that we serve. And I wanted to encourage you all in knowing that God has already planned for your life. He's already known you from before the foundations of the earth. And he already knows what you're going to do. And he has planned already because of it. One of my favorite verses, and I'm going to leave you guys with this,

is Ephesians chapter two, verse 10. We are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

To those who are believers in Christ, God has plans for you. To everyone who has accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, God has good works for you. To those who don't believe in Christ, God has good works for you. To those who haven't entered through Christ, I would encourage you to pray about, to think about it. To really think about it.

Let me pray for you and we'll go ahead and do some worship. Heavenly Father, we thank you so much for your word. We thank you for the plans that you have that you have before the foundations of the earth, foundations of the world that you have chosen each believer, Lord. That you know who we are and yet still chose us, Lord. You are amazing and you are a good, good Father.

Help us to lay aside the sin that so easily ensnares, Lord. Run a race with endurance, Lord, with our focus fixed upon you, Lord.

Lord, send revival. Lord, send it now. Lord, send it now. The move of your spirit. Lord, send revival. Lord, send it now. Come now in power. Cover this land. Like you've done it before. Lord, send revival. Lord, send it now. Come now in power. Heavenly Father, God, I just want to bring you praise, God, because you are worthy of all praise. God, you are King above all kings,

Lord above all lords, name above all names, God. We just want to praise you this morning, God. Let our lives be a reflection of that praise, God. Help us just to praise you in everything that we do, in everything that happens, Lord. Help us just to simply lift praise to you, God. Lord, this morning I just pray as we leave here, God, just pray that you would bless all the dads out there, Lord.
