Leviticus 3–4

To Leviticus chapter 3 Leviticus chapter 3 We're continuing on tonight Looking at the offerings Of the Lord The children of Israel Would bring the way That they were supposed To bring these offerings We said there were five Altogether that we were Going to look at Last week we looked At the first two We looked at The burnt offering And the grain offering Both of which were What we would call Voluntary offerings The burnt offering Of course was a An offering of consecration The entire sacrifice Was offered On the altar Before the Lord And burned before the Lord And then the grain offering Was one that was An offering Not only of Thanksgiving To the Lord But it also spoke Very much of the Humanity of Jesus And his perfection And tonight we come

To two more offerings We come to the Peace offering Or the fellowship offering And the sin offering So we pick up In Leviticus chapter 3 Verse 1 And this is what it says Now if his offering Is a sacrifice Of peace offerings If he's going to Offer out of the herd Whether male or female He shall offer it Without defect Before the Lord He shall lay his hand On the head of the offering And slay it at the doorway Of the tent of meeting And Aaron's sons The priests Shall sprinkle the blood On the altar From the sacrifice Of the peace offerings He shall present An offering by fire To the Lord The fat that covers The entrails And all the fat That is on the entrails And the two kidneys With the fat That is on them Which is on the loins

And the lobe of the liver Which he shall remove With the kidneys Then Aaron's sons Shall offer it Up in smoke On the altar On the burnt offering Which is on the wood That is on the fire It is an offering By fire Of a soothing aroma To the Lord Now this Next offering That we come to This offering Of the peace offering Was an expression Of gratefulness For peace And fellowship With God Again it's often times Called the Fellowship offering And it pictures First of all The peace that we have With God Because of the blood Of Jesus Christ In this case The blood of the Sacrifice But it also pictures That peace That fellowship That we have With each other It's not only man With God But it's also Man with man The fact that we Have fellowship With each other

Because of the blood Of the sacrifice And for us As New Testament saints Because of the blood Of Jesus Christ John Corson In his commentary Points out That this very much Looks a lot like The communion That you and I Would partake in Which also typifies The peace that we have With God Through the blood Of Jesus Christ As well as the unity That we have With each other Because of the blood Of Jesus Christ And so That's it's purpose Now let's talk About it's process So Unlike the burnt offering This one could either Be a male or a female So if you were taking From the herd In other words From of the cattle Then it could be Either a bull Or a cow But it just had to be Without defect They had to examine Make sure that everything Looked perfect

And then much like The sacrifice of the Burnt offering They would bring The offering The sacrifice To the door Of the tent of meeting And they would once again Lay the hands On the head Of the offering Of the sacrifice That was to be made We talked about The importance of this Last week Because it spoke Of substitution It spoke of the fact That you were Transmitting your own guilt Your own whatever On the head of that animal And it was the Substitute for you And as they Laid his hands On the head of the sacrifice Once again The one bringing The sacrifice Would be the one That would Slit the throat Of the sacrifice And then what they would do Is the priest Would help them With this next part of it They would take First of all Some of the blood

Of the sacrifice And they would sprinkle it On that altar Of burnt offering But then they would Begin to portion out Parts of the sacrifice The part that was To be burned to God Was the fat The fat around the kidneys And the fat tail That's what was To be offered to God Now you and I Hear that and we go Well of course That's what I'd offer Because I'm not Because that's the part That I don't want Ah but that was The tasty part Right? You know as well as I do That if a steak Has no fat on it It's like what's the point Right? Like there's no flavor In that thing It's going to be really dry You want a little Marbly look in that thing Well it was the same here This was the Considered the delicacy Or the best part But we'll talk about later

Why it was important That that was offered to God And so they would Take those things And they would Lay them up on the altar And they would burn Those things And it says that it was A soothing Aroma Unto the Lord One of the things We'll continue to notice About these sacrifices That I really appreciate About God Is that God really enjoys A good barbecue Have you noticed that About God? That every time It says that the The sacrifice Of the meat Was burned Before the Lord It says it was A soothing aroma To Him Now I don't know About y'all But every time I show up to a barbecue Or I drive down the street Where they're making barbecue It too is a soothing aroma For me It's not only A soothing aroma Because I know It's pleasing to God Because

God enjoys a barbecue But it's a soothing aroma Because I know Mmm That's barbecue Right? And so that's kind of What it is with God Now the thing That's not pointed out In this particular chapter That will be pointed out In chapter 7 Of the book of Leviticus Is that this particular sacrifice Was the only sacrifice In which The one offering the sacrifice Actually got to take part In some of the meat So what would take place At this point in time The priest would help them To cut the animal Up And to cut off the parts That were supposed To be offered to God But then there was A portion of the meat That the priest would take So you've got God's part Which is the fatty liver All that kind of stuff And then you've got The part that the priest Would take

There was a particular Portion of the meat That the priest Was supposed to take But then the offerer himself Would be given A portion of the meat As well Why Would the one being Why would the one Making the offering Also be given A portion of the meat Well because remember This is a Fellowship offering It was a peace offering And so that person That was making This peace offering This fellowship offering Would be able to take The portion of the meat That belonged to him And he would be able To cook that meat And he would be able To eat that meat And it was to be A picture of the fact That he and God Were enjoying fellowship Together You see Eating a meal together Looked a little bit Different back then Than it does today Eating a meal together

Today as we've pointed out Before It's kind of no big deal In a lot of ways Right I've pointed out That you go to a lot Of restaurants right now Although with social distancing Perhaps it's A little different I haven't paid as much Of attention But I know that there's A particular Chipotle That I go to That when you're sitting there I'm sitting here Another person is sitting here And another person Is sitting here But I don't know Those other two people Because that's how close You're sitting with these people Now If you will I'm a part of their conversation And you can ask my wife I'm a part of their conversation Right That's one of my biggest Weaknesses in life Is sitting next to somebody That I've never met before And I do two things Number one

I give them the awkward Creep stare I don't mean to give that stare But my wife will look at me And she'll go Creep stare And I'll know I'm giving it And now Violet's Kind of picked up on that too She's like Daddy you're staring I'm like I can't help it It's fascinating What's going on over there But then the other thing That I do besides The awkward creep stare Is I'm sitting there I like to take part In the conversation Like if they're saying Oh hey I wonder what Fill in blank with question here And I know the answer And I'm going I know the answer to that question I'll look at my wife And she'll say Don't do it And I'm like And so I'll join them With the conversation Sometimes they like that Most of the time they don't

But that's what eating together Was like at that point in time You see Eating together at this point in time Meant that you were one With each other Because there was a oneness That took place In a meal If I was willing To share a meal with you It meant that I was Considering you like Family Well this oneness That was created With people Is the same kind of oneness That's created Because of the blood with God And so when we sat down And share a meal with him Through this fellowship offering It was me declaring That because of the blood Of this sacrifice I too am one with God And in fellowship with him And so that's what's important About this offering right now And so as we look At this process We take notice That much like some Of the other things

There was more than one thing That you could offer Because God understood That some could afford From the herd But some had to afford Something a little bit less And so we take note Of the same thing In this peace offering And so first of all We saw what it looked like To take from the herd But now we see in verse 6 But his offering For a sacrifice Of peace offerings To the Lord If it's from the flock He shall offer it Male or female Without defect If he is going to offer A lamb for his offering Then he shall offer it Before the Lord And he shall lay his hand On the head of his offering And slay it before The tent of meeting And Aaron's sons Shall sprinkle its blood Around on the altar From the sacrifice Of peace offering

He shall bring as an offering By fire to the Lord Its fat The entire fat tail Which he shall remove Close to the backbone And the fat that covers The entrails And all the fat That is on the entrails And the two kidneys With the fat That is on them Which is on the loins And with the lobe Of the liver Which he shall remove With the kidneys Then the priest Shall offer it up In smoke on the altar As food And offering by fire To the Lord So if he's going To offer a lamb Same rules apply Male or female Without blemish Lays his hands On the head of the lamb Slays the lamb The fatty good portion Belongs to the Lord And is burned Before the Lord Then there is For it once again Be the partaking Of the meat Some would belong To the Lord

Which is the fatty portion Some would belong To the priest And some would belong To the offerer So that he could have That fellowship meal Before the Lord But now If he couldn't afford that Verse 12 If his offering Is a goat Then he shall offer it Before the Lord And he shall lay His hand On its head And slay it Before the tent of meeting The sons of Aaron Shall sprinkle its blood Around on the altar From it He shall present His offering As an offering by fire To the Lord The fat that covers The entrails And all the fat That is on the entrails And the two kidneys With the fat That is on them Which is on the loins And the lobe of the liver Which he shall remove With the kidneys The priest Shall offer up And smoke on the altar As food

An offering by fire For a soothing aroma All fat That is the Lord's It is a perpetual statute Throughout your generations In all your dwelling You shall not eat Any fat Or any blood Now I think it's kind of interesting To pay attention to the fact That God goes into Great detail With the very first of this When he offers this peace offering Right? When it's from the herd He goes into detail About what the process is like But again Two other options are offered And yet God does not Slight those other options Simply because They're a less expensive Sort of animal God is clear To make the instructions Every bit as clear On the other two animals As he does the first Why is that? Well first of all Because he wants them to understand

Just because you can't afford the best Doesn't mean that I don't look at it the same way Just because you can't afford The best Doesn't mean that Your instructions are less than Those that can afford from the herd Because God views it all the same Because remember God was less concerned with The price of the animal And he was more concerned with The sacrifice of the heart And so He tells the exact same thing Here But I think the other reason Is that Sometimes we can think Well I don't have to offer to God Exactly the same way I can sort of back off On the criteria Because I've sort of Backed off on the expense Therefore God doesn't demand As much of me But that's not the case at all You see God's righteous standard Is God's righteous standard

That doesn't change Now the next thing I'd like for you to take note of Is what it says here In verse 17 It says It is a perpetual statute That is not Throughout your generations In all your dwellings That you shall not eat any fat Or eat any of the blood Now This is something interesting For us to pay attention to Why is it a perpetual statute That you were not supposed to do that? Well The fat represented The absolute best part of the animal The part that Everyone desired Because it was the tastiest portion Of the animal And yet the best of the animal Was to belong to God That meant As a perpetual statute Throughout their generations They needed to make sure That the best Always Belonged to God Why does he make it A perpetual statute?

Because he knows Who we are as humans Because he knows That we'll start off Doing really well We'll start off Offering God our best Because we come out of the chute Hot, right? And we're excited Yes, I'm going to give God my best I'm always going to give God my best But two or three years down the road We go You know That'll probably do it That's probably good enough Isn't it? And God needed to keep them In a constant reminder That he always wanted their best But then there's this aspect Of the blood Why was the blood so important? Because the blood Represented life It's interesting now To take a look at studies That people have done on blood And all of the different things That are carried throughout our body With the blood The oxygen that's carried

The DNA that's carried All the different things That are carried throughout our body Because of the blood Because really The blood is the life of your body As a matter of fact If there's a portion of your body Where the circulation begins to cut off To be cut off That particular part of your body Will actually begin to die Because it doesn't have any blood Because the thing that's carrying The necessary ingredients To keep your body pumping Is the blood And while that's absolutely true Of the physical life May I say that's also Absolutely true of our spiritual life Because God wanted them To always understand Just how precious blood is Because it would not only be The blood of bulls and goats That would cover their sins Temporarily

Until the coming of the perfect sacrifice But it would be the very blood Of Jesus Christ That carried in it Not only physical life But it carried in it Spiritual life for you and I And so when he said It should be a perpetual statue Throughout your body Throughout your generations You shall not eat the fat Because that's the best And the best belongs to God But you also should not eat the blood Because the blood represented life And your life belongs to God That coupled with the fact That there were actually health issues That went into the eating Of those things as well Because often times What God tells us spiritually Also carries with it Great physical benefit for us as well Because the fat that you eat Is tasty as hell As it is

We all know that it adds to things Like cholesterol And all those kinds of crazy things Heart disease And all that sort of stuff That's not good for us And then of course we know that If we begin eating blood Or drinking blood That it carries with it All kinds of disease And it's really kind of I just saw somebody go Because it's really kind of gross Right? And so there's a physical benefit That goes along with it as well And so God tells them This is a perpetual statue Throughout your generations Now what do we learn from this? Well in the same way That we did the other sacrifices Let's follow the law Let's follow the same pattern First of all We learn some things about Jesus And the things that we learn about Jesus Are going to cause us

To have to do a little Bible searching So warm them up Because we're going to start looking Around some places in our Bible I want you to go to the New Testament I want you to go to Colossians chapter 1 Verse 20 Because everything about Jesus Or everything about the sacrifices In the Old Testament Explain to us what's going on In the New Testament Notice what it says Oh what the heck For context sake Let's start in verse 19 You knew I was going to say that I was going to say that anyway Colossians chapter 1 verse 19 It says this For it was the Father's good pleasure For all the fullness to dwell in Him Meaning Jesus And through Him To reconcile all things to Himself And here's where I want you To really pay attention Having made peace

Through the blood of His cross You see This peace offering This fellowship offering Represented the fact that they The children of Israel Were at peace with God Because of the blood of the sacrifice And because of the blood of that sacrifice They could continue to have Fellowship with God And that fellowship Was what they were created for And in the same way Jesus represents for us The perfect peace offering Because God made peace with Himself Through the blood of Jesus And so now we don't have to offer A bull or a goat or a lamb In order to have peace with God To have peace with God Because that peace was settled At the cross of Jesus Christ And so we see The first lesson that we learn about Jesus Is that He is the one who brought us peace

Through His blood The second thing that we learn Is over in the book of Romans Go to your left just a little bit Go to Romans chapter 5 I want you to look at Romans chapter 5 Verses 1 and 2 Romans chapter 5 verses 1 and 2 Says this Therefore having been justified with By faith Pay attention We have peace with God Through our Lord Jesus Christ Through whom also we obtained Our introduction by faith Into this grace in which we stand And we exalt in the hope Of the glory of God We have peace with God Through our Lord Jesus Christ Now this is different than the peace of God The peace of God is something that can Sometimes be there and sometimes not be there Depending on how much I'm really resting In God's presence

God's ability to handle whatever situation Is presented in front of me right now No this is peace with God You see when we were in sin We were at war with God God settled that war When He poured out all of His wrath Upon Jesus Christ When He poured out all of His wrath upon Jesus Christ The wrath of God was satisfied Against sin And now the moment that I put my faith In that finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross I'm no longer at war with Him Because I've accepted That peace sacrifice And now I can be at peace with God And so because of that I can have fellowship with Him But it's all because of what Jesus Christ Did for us on the cross Because He was that perfect Spotless sacrifice That was made for me That allowed me to be at peace with God

But you see there's another aspect Those two represent the fellowship That we have with God But remember we said that This fellowship offering not only Spoke of the fellowship that we have Between God and man But the fellowship that we have With each other That man has with man So I want you to go one more place with me I want you to go to the book of Ephesians I want you to look at chapter 2 And I wrote verse 14 But I wonder if I meant verse 14 I did Oh no I didn't let's do 13 Ephesians chapter 2 verse 13 This is what it says But now in Christ Jesus You who formerly were far off Have been brought near By the blood of Christ Well I'll tell you what That I can't help it That verse in and of itself Is about enough to turn you into a puddle

To just think about what God has done for us That we were not only strangers from the promise Aliens from the promise of God And yet we who were formerly far off as Gentiles He has brought near by the blood of Jesus Christ Go on from there verse 14 It says For he himself is our peace Who made both groups into one And he broke down the barrier of the dividing wall By abolishing in his flesh the enmity Which is the law of commandments Contained in ordinances So that in himself He might make the two into one new man Thus establishing peace What does he mean by this? You see there was no greater racial division At the time that Paul wrote this book Than there was between Jews and Gentiles They hated each other The Jewish people looked at the Gentiles

And saw them as not God's chosen people Matter of fact most of the Jewish people At this point in time viewed Gentiles Which is all of us As what God would use to stoke the fires of hell That's how they viewed us But Gentiles didn't treat Jewish people much better They treated them as freaks They treated them as peculiar people Because of their strange customs And their strange customs Because of the strange way That they wore the phylacteries on their head The robes that they wore The way that they cut their hair Everything And they treated them as absolute freaks And there was no greater racial division That took place at this point in time Than the division between Jew and Gentile Which is why what Paul says here

While it's absolutely true of what God did with us In drawing us near The point he's actually making Is that God took the Gentile people And drew them near to the Jewish people Because he himself Is our peace Who has broken down the middle wall of separation You see in the temple at that point in time There was this wall that divided The court of the Gentiles Which was where anybody else could go And the court of the Jews Which was where only Jewish people could go And there was a sign on the door Of that wall that divided between The court of the Gentiles and the court of the Jews And the sign said this If you're a Gentile and you walk through this door You're taking your life in your own hands And the sign said this Don't enter

And so when Paul says He himself is our peace Who has broken down the middle wall of separation What he's telling us is Though there were vast differences Between Jewish and Gentile people In Christ there is no longer separation In Christ there is no longer division Because the same blood of Jesus Christ That brings me near to him Is the same blood of Jesus Christ That brings you near to him Whether you're a Jew or a Gentile Whether you are slave or free Whether you are man or woman Male or female Whether you are Republican or Democrat Whether you are white or black Whether you think Kyle Rittenhouse is guilty or not It's the same blood of Jesus Christ That draws us near And if we want to see divisions healed

It can't happen through critical race theory It can't happen through all of the things That they're trying to spread in schools right now It can't happen from us as conservatives Telling people that believe in critical race theory How stupid they are None of those things are true None of those things will bring peace The only thing that will bring peace Is the blood of Jesus Christ Because in Christ We are all a new creation And as New Testament believers We have to understand something There are two divisions of people People that are in Christ And people that are not in Christ Those are the only two divisions That's it And if we know people that aren't in Christ I don't care what color their skin is Or what their political beliefs are

I want to see them come to the knowledge of Christ Because that's what we're to be in the business of doing Because while on the one hand I don't think that we need to start fighting the woke battle On the other hand I don't think we need to start fighting the conservative battle I think we need to start fighting the battle for souls And the battle for people Because souls are what's eternal Not all of the political things Or the political garbage that we see today You see He himself is our peace Because he's broken down any middle wall of separation And that all happened through Christ So what does this mean for us?

So for us I think there's two big things That we take away from this Number one We were created for fellowship with God For the life of me I can't remember where I read it I've read too many things this week But it was another place in scripture It might have been in my reading in Isaiah I don't know I didn't journal it I tried to look back I couldn't find it But it was another place in scripture That said the exact same thing That it says in the book of Colossians chapter 1 If we go down a few verses From where we were in chapter 1 verse 20 It goes on to say that we were all created by him And we were all created for him As a matter of fact If you go back into the book of Genesis And if you go into Genesis chapter 3 Right after Adam and Eve sinned

And they made coverings for themselves And hid themselves from God It says that God showed up to walk with Adam And Eve in the cool of the day And according to the way the Hebrew is written there We're given the indication that That was something God did with them every day That God would show up in the cool of the day Every day to walk with them Why? Because they were created for fellowship That's what we were created for And so what makes this fellowship offering so amazing? Because this is the one thing we were created for Is fellowship with God That fellowship was broken out of us And broken by sin You see, what was it that caused Adam and Eve To hide themselves from God? It was the fact that they sinned And were made aware of their guilt

Therefore they hid themselves from God And as they hid themselves from God That fellowship was at that point in time broken So what step did God take to heal the relationship? What step did God take to heal the brokenness? Well first of all He made a promise that he would send a savior Who would ultimately crush the head of the serpent But then do you remember the next thing that he did? The next thing that he did was He created clothing for them He took the skins of an animal And he created coverings for them Because their one knowledge of sin Was their understanding that they were naked before God And so God made a covering for them Why did he make a covering?

So that they wouldn't have to hide themselves Why were they hiding themselves? Because their fellowship had been broken In Christ He doesn't just provide us an animal covering for our sin In Christ He doesn't just provide us an animal covering for our sin He does away with the sin And so now we can have fellowship with him Not hoping that the next year God will pass over our sins again But we have fellowship with him Knowing that our sins are completely done Completely gone away with So number one For us What it means is We were created for fellowship with God But number two I think what this means for us Is a distinct understanding of verse 17 Peace and fellowship Is a way to get rid of sin Is enjoyed As I give God my best And as I give God my life

Peace and fellowship with God Is enjoyed as I give God my best And as I give God my life You see I can still belong to him And try to hold back pieces of myself Portions of myself But I'll never really enjoy fellowship with him I'll never really enjoy my relationship with God As long as there are portions of my life That I'm withholding from him And I'll never really enjoy my relationship with God As long as I'm not fully dedicating Everything of myself to him As long as I'm saying But the fat still belongs to me Even though I kind of like the fat to belong to me And as long as I think But the blood is still mine Because I want to hold on to my life Because there's still a part of my life That I want to live for myself Do I still belong to him?

Yeah, I still belong to him I'm just not doing everything I was created for I'm not enjoying fellowship with him In the way that I should I'm not fulfilling what God does for me Created me to do So that's how peace and fellowship Is enjoyed the most with God So now we move on to chapter 4 Back in the book of Leviticus We're looking at the sin offering Notice what it says Then the Lord spoke to Moses saying Speak to the sons of Israel saying If a person sins unintentionally In any of the things which the Lord God Commanded not to be done And commits any of them If the anointed priest sins So as to bring guilt on the people Then let him offer to the Lord A bull without defect As a sin offering For the sin he has committed

Now this next offering that we look at Is of course the sin offering This sin offering, the purpose of it Was to atone for unintentional sins Of weakness Of ignorance Or of carelessness Now Throughout my walk with Jesus Christ I have struggled with this particular offering You know why? Because I have heard the truth of who God is And the truth of what sin is Since before I can even remember So I'm well aware of the fact That any sin that I commit Is not committed in ignorance I can't be like I didn't know that that was a sin I'm sorry But you know what? The children of Israel weren't any different So what does he mean by unintentional sins? Well I don't think it's just a sin Because you didn't realize You weren't supposed to do that

I think that's where that aspect of carelessness And weakness comes into play Because sometimes in our lives We stop taking life as seriously as we should Let me take that back We stop taking sin as seriously as we should And sometimes we get a little bit careless in our walk And one thing leads to another And we're going, whoa, when did that happen? Well it happened when I drifted That's why we're told in the book of Hebrews Beware lest you drift away And it can happen to you in the future And it can happen in carelessness But you know where else sin comes about? Sin comes about because of my weakness Sin comes about because we're just weak And we'll never do it perfect And there's just going to be some days where

Doggone it, I'm going to blow up at somebody Or doggone it, I'm going to let something slip out of my mouth That I didn't mean to because I'm weak And I'm but dust But God knows my frame And he knows that I'm but dust Which is why he provides me with sin And he's provided a sacrifice for unintentional sins The kind of sin we should get concerned about Is the sin that's called sinning with a high hand Isn't that a great name for a type of a sin? Those are the presumptuous sins That are spoken of in the book of Numbers Literally that means sinning with a high hand And the idea is a heart of rebellion that says I don't care about you I'll do what I want to do It's a hard-hearted sort of sin

But you know what the beautiful thing about being a New Testament saint is? God's grace is greater than all of our sin Because you know somebody that committed What I would call a high-handed sin? David David's always given me a great deal of hope Because David is somebody who knew from the time that he was very young What sin was and what sin wasn't And yet David committed one of the greatest atrocities Written in the Old Testament Because of his great knowledge of God And yet David committed one of the greatest atrocities Because of his great knowledge of God And yet David committed one of the greatest atrocities Because of his broken spirit And his broken and his contrite heart The kind of sacrifice that God will never deny God forgave him

So we look at this unintentional sin This atoning for our general sin nature And what we're going to take note of Is there's four categories that we're going to deal with The first one is If the anointed priest sins Notice what it says If the anointed priest sins Verse 3 So as to bring guilt on the people Then let him offer the Lord a blessing Bull without defect as a sin offering For the sin he has committed He shall bring the bull to the doorway of the tent of meeting before the Lord He shall lay his hand on the head of the bull And slay the bull before the Lord Then the anointed priest is to take some of the blood And bring it to the tent of meeting And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood

And sprinkle some of the blood seven times before the Lord In front of the veil of the sanctuary The priest shall also put some of the blood on the horns of the altar Of fragrant incense Which is before the Lord in the tent of meeting And all the blood of the bull He shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering Which is at the doorway of the tent of meeting He shall remove from it All the fat of the bull of the sin offering The fat that covers the entrails All the fat which is on the entrails And the two kidneys with the fat that is on them Which is on the loins and the lobe of the liver Which he shall remove with the kidneys Just as it is removed From the ox of the sacrifice of peace and glory And the priest is to offer them up

In smoke on the altar of burnt offering But the height of the bull and all its flesh With its head and its legs and its entrails Is refuse That is all the rest of the bull He is to bring out to a clean place outside the camp Where the ashes are poured out And burn it on wood with fire Where the ashes are poured out It shall be burned So here's the process Very similar to some of the other sacrifices He finds the fire This time a bull It was to be a male And it was to be without blemish Now remember this is the sacrifice that was made If the anointed priest sins And we're going to find that it's a little bit more intense Than the other sacrifices Because he was held to a higher level of accountability And so he brings this bull

To the door of the tent of meeting Once again lays his hands on the head of the bull Because the guilt is being transferred onto the bull That bull is his substitute He slays the bull This time what happens is the bull is skinned Most of it is taken away Except of course the fat parts Which are put on the altar But this time we're told a little bit more Of what's done with the blood Particularly with this anointed priest The blood was now to be taken three places The first place that it was taken to Is that it was sprinkled seven times Inside the tent of meeting On the veil That leads into the most holy place Then some of the blood was taken to the Altar of fragrant incense Which is still inside of the holy place

And it was to be rubbed on the horns of the altar It was to be applied to the holy place On the horns of that particular altar And then it was taken out to the altar of burnt offering And it was poured around the base After it had been sprinkled on the altar of burnt offering David Guzik in his commentary Pointed out something that I think we should all pay attention to Because each of these deals With some way that God was offended By the sin The first one is with the veil With the veil Sin offends the holiness of God Because listen Sin is an affront to the holiness of God Sin is an affront to the holiness of God Sidebar I don't think we always know just how sinful sin is Because we don't always pay attention To just how holy God is

Forgetting the fact that he is Holy beyond our understanding Therefore sin is sinful Beyond our understanding And so he was to take some of the blood Of the sacrifice and sprinkle it Seven times on that veil Why? Because the veil stood for the holiness of God Because that's what separated the holy place From the most holy place Which is where the presence of God and the ark of the covenant dwell Therefore He had to atone for that offense Of the holiness of God But the second place that he would take it Is the altar of burnt incense Of fragrant incense Why? Because what does that represent? Well it represents prayer And what is one of the greatest effects That sin has in our life It will destroy our prayer life We talked about this Sunday

My communication with God My fellowship with God is cut off by sin Therefore if I want my prayer life To be restored If I want that fellowship and communication With God restored Then that altar of burnt incense Has to be covered with the blood But may I also add one thing That just came to me now That I didn't read in David Guzik That I think is important also What else did that altar of incense represent? Jesus making propitiation Jesus interceding for us And that blood of the sacrifice Was a picture of that intercession Of the blood of the Lamb For us But then the third thing that we see Is that it was to be applied To the altar of burnt offering Why? Because that was the ultimate place Where sin was atoned for Because sin separates from God

Therefore it had to be covered and atoned for And that's what took place On that altar of burnt offering Of course then they would take the fat And the kidneys and they would burn them on the altar But then the rest was taken outside of the camp The hide and everything Was taken outside of the camp A portion of the meat will learn In a couple of chapters Is going to belong to the priest But the one making the offering Received nothing from this offering There was to be no selfish endeavor There was to be no selfish anything That went into this offering It was a complete sacrifice Because that's what sin requires A complete sacrifice Now that's if the priest sins Now looking down at verse 13 It says now if the whole congregation of Israel

Commits error In the matter he escapes the notice of the assembly And they commit any of the things Which the Lord has commanded not to be done Like if they all complained at the same time And they become guilty Which we'll see happens throughout the book of Numbers When the sin which they have committed Becomes known Then the assembly shall offer a bull of the herd For a sin offering And bring it before the tent of meeting Take note of verse 15 Then the elders of the congregation Shall lay their hands on the head of the bull Before the Lord The bull shall be slain before the Lord Then the anointed priest Is to bring some of the blood of the bull To the tent of meeting And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood And sprinkle it seven times

Before the Lord in front of the veil He shall put some of the blood On the horns of the altar Which is before the Lord in the tent of meeting And all the blood shall pour out Of the base of the altar Of burnt offering Which is at the doorway of the tent He shall remove all its fat from it And offer it up in smoke On the altar He shall also do with the bull Just as he did with the bull of the sin offering Thus he shall do with it So the priest shall make atonement for them And they will be forgiven Then he is to bring out the bull to a place Outside the camp And burn it as he burned the first bull It is the sin offering For the whole assembly The biggest difference this time Is that it wasn't just the individual

That would lay his hands on the head of the bull It was all of the elders Why would all of the elders lay their hands on the head of the bull? Because they were representatives for the congregation And so it was transferring the sin Of the entire congregation Onto the head of the bull So that atonement could be made Through that blood And then the third one When a leader sins Verse 22 And unintentionally does any one Of all the things which the Lord his God Commanded not to be done And he becomes guilty If his sin which he has committed is made known to him He shall bring for his offering a goat A male without defect He shall lay his hand on the head of the male goat And slay it in the place where they slay The burnt offering before the Lord

It is a sin offering Then the priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering With his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering The rest of the blood he shall pour At the base of the altar of burnt offering All its fat he shall offer up in smoke On the altar as in the case Of the sacrifice of peace offerings Thus the priest Shall make atonement for him In regard to his sin and he will be forgiven Verse 22 And then we move on to the common folk That's us Now if any one of the common people Sins unintentionally
