His Workmanship

love the sound of pages. Go over to Galatians chapter 2. Just two or three pages over to your left. Galatians chapter 2. And I want you to look at verse 16. Galatians 2, 16. It says, Nevertheless, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, I'll pay attention, but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law.

Since by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified. No matter who you are, you have to understand that by the works of the law, no one can be saved. You can only be saved through faith in Jesus Christ. Unless we think that this is just a Pauline, idea. In other words, Paul was the only one that came up with it. I want you to go over to the book of 1 Peter. All the way over to your right. Go past Hebrews, James. If you hit 1 John, you've

gone too far. 1 Peter. And I want you to look at 1 Peter chapter 1. Oh, I wrote verse 5. Let's start in verse 3 for context's sake. 1 Peter chapter 1, verse 3. Notice what it says. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy, mercy, has come. Caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from

the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, pay attention, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. What did we say being saved meant? We said being saved meant rescued from, from danger, kept safe. What does he say faith does? Faith protects us

as we wait for that salvation. It can only be accessed through faith, through you coming to Jesus and saying, Lord, I believe what you've promised. When you believe what he promises, you access all of his grace. Once you access all of that grace, that grace ushers you into salvation. By grace, you have been saved through faith. Fourth thing I want you to take note of,

back to Ephesians chapter two. Fourth thing I want you to take note of is this. It is not of yourselves. It is not of yourselves. It's not from you as a source. Literally, that's what that means. In other words, it cannot be through your own efforts. If you remember last week, we said that we all were dead in two things. You remember what those two things were? We were dead in two things. We were dead in two things. We were dead in two things.

We were dead in transgressions and sins. You remember those two things? So we were guilty of two things. Number one, we were guilty of transgressions or trespasses. We said that that was a rebellious violation of the law. It's crossing a line that we knew exists. That's rebellion. But the second thing that we were guilty of is sin. Sin means to miss the mark.

It's a failure on our part. So if we are guilty of trespasses, which is rebellion, and we're guilty of sin, we're guilty of sin. We're guilty of sin. We're guilty of sin. We're guilty of sin. We're guilty of sin. We're guilty of sin. We're guilty of sin. We're guilty of sin. We're guilty of sin. What does that mean? I am unable to do. If I struggle with sin or failure, that means that

my own good works will never be enough because I will always fall short. That's why in Romans chapter three, verse 23, it says, for all have sinned, missed the mark and fallen short of the glory of God. Therefore, it cannot be by my own efforts because all of my own efforts always fall what? Short of the glory of God. One of the commentators that I read told an amazing story.

He said, I want you, I want to put it to you like this. Imagine if you will, there is a ship that gets stranded in the middle of the ocean, 1500 miles from land. And on board that ship are three different types of men. One is an Olympic swimmer. As a matter of fact, he has a gold medal for his ability to swim. One is just an average swimmer. He can swim. He's never going to the

Olympics. The third guy can't swim a lick. He's never tried to swim in a day in his life. They all three jump off the ship to try to reach land. Within two minutes, the guy that can't swim, well, he's swimming with the fishies now. The second guy who's a pretty good swimmer, he makes it about 20 minutes and then he sinks. But then the third guy who is the Olympic swimmer

swims for two hours and makes it however many miles, 50 miles. And he drowns. No matter how good each one of them was, what did they all do? They all fell short. Some may have been a little better than others, but they all fell short. And that's exactly the way it is with us. That's why it can never be by my own works. It can never come from me as a source because I am a poor source for good works.

As a matter of fact, you know what? The scripture tells me about all the good works that I have. They're like filthy rags. Only let me put that to you in the more literal sense. They're all like menstrual cloths, right? That's how God views my good works because they'll never be good enough. That's why it is by grace that I have been saved through faith. And it's not of myself. That brings us to the fifth thing that

he tells us in verses eight and nine. It is a gift of God. It is a gift of God. It is a gift of God. Of God. Now I looked this word gift up and I thought it was a pretty interesting word because the word gift here is the same word that's used for a sacrifice or an offering for a free will offering that the sacrificer would bring to God, right? That is a gift. Only the gift is not what

we give to God. The gift is what God gave to us. Therefore he actually gives us a sacrifice. Well, what's the sacrifice that he gave to us? I mean, come on, right? It's Jesus. He made the ultimate sacrifice for us. He met free will offering for us so that he could gift to us his salvation. The greatest Christmas morning you ever had was the one when you opened up the gift of salvation and you realized I'm now

secure eternally in Christ. It is a gift. And who is it a gift from? It is a gift directly from God. And I love the way the Amplified translation puts this. It is a gift from God, given by God, listen, with no strings attached. You know, I appreciate that they put that because what do we do as human beings? We give gifts with strings attached to them oftentimes, right? We're like, but I gave

you so many things. Aren't you going to do this for me? But I gave you so many things. I expect this in return from you. God's like, I'm just going to give you this gift. And then I'm still going to let you make the free will decision as to whether or not you're going to accept it. It's a gift given. With no strings attached. The sixth thing that he tells us is that it is not of works.

It is not of works. As a matter of fact, the New American Standard translates it this way, not as a result of works. The Wiest translation put it this way, not from a source of works or your attempts to keep the law. In other words, your work can't provide any of this. We're talking about baptism right now, right? And I love baptisms. They're amazing, but baptism won't save you. Do you know that?

Because if baptism saved you, what would your salvation be according to? Works. Communion cannot save you. Otherwise your salvation would be according to works. Church attendance cannot save you. Otherwise your salvation would be according to works. Going through a confirmation class will not save you. Otherwise you won't have to have a person pop in the bathroom. You won't

be saved. You will not be saved. You will not be saved. You will not be saved. You will not be saved. You Otherwise, your salvation is according to works. There's nothing you can do to earn it. Have you noticed this is the second time he's put it in there? Why do you think it's the second time he's said it? Because we don't listen the first time. Because we don't listen very well.

And it is so innately ingrained in our nature to earn our salvation. It is so innately ingrained with us to work for what God wants to give us that we are so legalistic in our thinking that we have to be told over and over again, you can't earn your position with God. It can only be gifted to you. As a matter of fact, let's take a little trip through Romans, shall we?

Hold your finger here. Again, go with me, kids. Please stick with me. Romans chapter 3.

Romans chapter 3. I want you to look at verse 27.

Romans 3.27 says this. Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No. But by a law of faith. You see, a law of works would bring about boasting. We'll talk about that in just a minute. But a law of faith brings about thanksgiving. Right? Because grace renders what? Favor on the part of the giver. Gratitude on the part of the receiver.

Right? Go over to Romans chapter 4, verse 4. Should just be the next page over or maybe even just down your page that you're on right now. Now, to the one who works. His wage is not credited as a favor, but what is due. You see, if it was something that you can work for, God can't give it to you because it's something that you've earned. Right? And God says, well, now I have to give it to you because you've earned it.

But that's not what it is. It's a gift from God, not from a source of worries. Go over to Romans chapter 11.

Romans chapter 11, verse 6.

Romans chapter 11. Romans chapter 11, verse 6 says this. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works. Otherwise, grace is no longer grace. One more place. Go over to Galatians chapter 2, verse 21.

Galatians chapter 2, verse 21. I do not nullify the grace of God. For if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ. God died needlessly. Listen, we all have to understand something. And I tell you this because I'm acutely aware of the fact that no matter how many times I tell you that salvation is not according to works, it's according to grace. Your flesh will still want to make it according to works.

I tell you this because it's really, really important to hear. If your salvation is based upon the works that you do, then it was pointless for Christ to die. Then that was the most ridiculous thing. For the father to make the son do. And it nullifies. The work of the cross in our lives. But brothers and sisters. It's not by works. It's not by what you can do.

It's not according to how good you are. God deals with you on your raw materials. You know what I love to hear more than anything else in the world. I love to hear somebody. Tell me who they were before Christ. And then see who they are. Because I'm so well aware that there was nothing that they could do to earn that. As a matter of fact, one of my favorite verses.

And all of scripture. And I'm going to be teaching on this up in Johnson County. Comes out of the book of Isaiah. And it says this. It says, thus says the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity. Whose name is holy. I dwell on a high and holy hill. With him who is of age. A broken spirit. And a broken and contrite heart. Brothers and sisters. God is so far beyond our reaching.

God is so far beyond our access. God is so far beyond us. And the only way that we can reach him. Is not by trying harder. But by giving up. By giving up my own ways. By giving up my own flesh. By giving up my own need to be right. My own need to be good. My own need to do it myself. And eventually say. I need help. I need help. I need the grace of God. I'm dead in my trespasses and sins.

And I just need some mercy right now. For by grace you have been saved. Through faith. And it's not of yourself. It's a gift of God. And it's not of works. Why? Go back to Ephesians chapter 2. So that no one may boast. So that no one may boast. Can you imagine? Well. Why do we struggle with legalism? Why do we struggle with wanting to be able to do it ourselves?

Because you know what we want to be able to tell everybody? I did it. Myself. I was talking to Aaron about this yesterday. I was kind of meditating on this while I was mowing the yard yesterday. And when I went running last night. I was just kind of thinking through all these things. And I thought about a little girl that Aaron used to take care of. When I first met my wife.

She was a nanny for a family. They had three kids when I first met her. They had a fourth one while we were dating. But one little girl. She was about three years old. So she was really wanting to do things on her own. So anytime she wanted to do something by herself. She'd say. No Alan. I can do it by my own big old self. And that was what she said all the time.

So that kind of became a joke for us. And eventually you know what? She'd have to do. And when can you help me? Right? Because even though she wanted to do it her own big girl self. She couldn't do it her own big girl self. And I thought isn't that just like us? Aren't we just a grown up version of that? We say no God. I want to do it my own big girl self. I would say my own big boy self.

But you know what I'm saying? I want to do it my own self. Until finally we make a big mess of it. And we say. Can't do it. I can't do it. And then all of a sudden there's no more boasting. I don't say. Look at what I did. And you know what I say? Look at what God did. Look at what God did in my life. Look at how God changed. Look at how amazing God's grace is.

That he showed to me. In my own life. Can you imagine what it would be like. In heaven. If we get there and everybody earned their way there. It would not be heaven. Right? Like that would be the most miserable. That would be hell. And that is what hell is going to be like. You know what? I got myself here. You know what I did to get here? Let me tell you what I did to get here.

Right? That's what everybody's going to be doing in hell. And everybody's going to be like. Shut up. Right? Because they're tired of hearing your stupid old stories.

Do you know how you can always tell when somebody's bound up in a legalistic life? Because they'll always tell you what they do. They'll always tell you the things that they've done. They'll always tell you about the works that they did. And there's no rest. Because they have to keep telling their story. So that they can make themselves feel like they're good enough.

Sometimes you come across. You come across people like that. And you're like. Aren't you tired? Aren't you ready to rest? Aren't you tired of fighting? Aren't you ready to come access God's grace? Aren't you ready to get off the treadmill? Start walking in the joy? For by grace you have been saved. Through faith. And not of yourselves. It's a gift of God. Not as a result of works.

So that no one may boast. Well that was number one. Was that you have been saved. The second thing that I want to tell you. Is that we are his workmanship. That's what it says in verse 10. For we are his workmanship. Created in Christ Jesus. For good works. Which God prepared beforehand. So that we should walk in them. This is the balance of the gospel. But even in the balance of the gospel.

We are going to see that it's God's work. It's still what he did. He tells us again five things I want us to pay attention to. About the fact that we are his workmanship. Number one is I want to explain to you. What the word workmanship means. The word workmanship in the Greek is the word poema. P-O-E-I-M-A. Poema. It's where we get our English word poem from.

And a lot of people will say. You are God's poem. I actually think that doesn't carry the fullest weight. Of what God intends for us. From this word workmanship. The word workmanship in the Greek means. Poema means. That which has been made. A masterpiece. Or a work. Of art. That which has been made. A masterpiece. Or a work of art. I actually prefer to use this phrase.

When it says that we are his workmanship. We are his. Masterpiece. Now. I'm not an artist. By nature. As a matter of fact. I can't draw anything. My artistic side. It rides the struggle bus. We'll just put it that way. I think that's the most politically correct way I can put it. It rides the struggle bus. But I have been around some very artistic people. And it's amazing to watch them work.

What's amazing to watch them. What's amazing about watching them. Is that they can look at something. And they can see not what it is. But what it will be. There's a fellow that lives here in Arc City. And he is an artist. And it's fascinating to me. I've gone out to his house. And talked to him a few times. And I've seen different canvases that he has. At different stages of the ball game.

And I'll ask him. What's this one going to be? What's this one going to be? And he can tell me. Even if it's just a blank canvas. With just a couple little colors on there. When sometimes my wife watches the devil's channel. HGTV. Sometimes when she watches. The devil's channel. People walk into a house. Right? And when they walk into a house. What do they look?

And they say. I can see this room is going to be here. And I can see this room is going to be here. And this is what this is going to be. And I'm like. All I see is a project. And that makes me angry. Right? All I see is I'm going to be frustrated. For the next six months of my life. Maybe five years. All depending on how geeked up I am. About this whole thing.

Right? That's what I see when I look at this. My wife is one of these artistic people. She can look in a house. And she can go. I can see the potential. I'm like. I can see the bulldozer. Right? I mean. That's the difference between the two of us. But it was so fascinating to talk to this guy. Because he would explain to me. What this artistic piece was going to be.

I have another friend that's a songwriter. He is a truly artistic guy. He's actually come here and led worship for us. Before Luke Schaefer. He did the praise thing for us out here. In the parking lot a few years ago. I love talking to him when he's writing a song. I love hearing his process. As a matter of fact. Every now and then. I can't claim a ton of credit for any of his songs.

But every now and then he'll message me. And he'll ask me a question about something. And he'll say. Hey. What do you think about this? I'm working on these lyrics. Work with me here. And so. So I'll throw my two cents in. He probably never uses it. But I throw my two cents in there. But it's fascinating to watch his work. To watch his process. As he works on his own works of art.

Because he knows what he wants it to be. He just has to get it there. That's what you are. You're a work of art. I mean. Once you understand something. You've been a work of art from the day that God created you. God has been fashioning you. And making you. From the day that he created you. As a matter of fact. His process began. Before you were even conceived.

Before you were even knit together. In your mother's womb. That's when the process began. Because he knew you before the foundations of the earth. And he began to do a work. When he knits you together. When he knits you together in your mother's womb. He knew exactly what he was doing. And he put you together perfectly. Because you are his masterpiece. You are his workmanship.

You are his work of art. And he knits you together. He puts you together. And it's always fascinating. To look back on your life before you got saved. And you didn't realize it at the time. But you're like. Whoa. That was God pointing me in the right direction. That was God leading me. That was God guiding me. That was God protecting me. That was God bringing me to a point of salvation.

You know why? Because you were his work of art. And he was going. And knocking off the rough edges. And now once you became born again. Now that you are saved. That work of art doesn't end. He's just continuing the work. Only now the work that he's doing. Is providing good works for you to walk into. Because he is continuing to make you his work of art. And you know how long that process will take?

Until the day you go home. To be with Jesus. That was why I always loved. What my old pastor up in Johnson County used to say. He never said a saint died. He said a saint graduated. Because God was finished with his work of art. And it was time to bring them home. And that's what God is doing in you. And so as we talk about good works here in just a moment.

I want you to understand that you are his workmanship. It is all his work. He is at work in you. And sometimes we look and say. Lord I don't see you doing much in me right now. I feel like a half finished canvas. And God goes. Oh it's because you can't see. You can't see yet what I've created for you to be. I'm always reminded of Peter right. Remember the first time that Peter met Jesus.

Peter's name was Simon. And Simon kind of carries with the idea of somebody who's a little bit emotional. And been given to their feelings a little bit shifty if you will. And their feelings. Jesus looked at Peter and he said. You are Simon. I'm going to call you Peter. I'm going to call you a rock. And if anybody knew Peter at that point in time. They'd have been like really.

It doesn't. It doesn't seem to make. Sense to me. Because well. He's not. Because Jesus was calling him not what he was. But what by God's grace. He would become. You know there's another great name like that in the Bible. It's in the Old Testament. You know when God called Abraham. His name was not Abraham. Yet his name was Abram. You know what the name Abram means.

The name Abram means father. Right. And so here is Abram father. Who has no kids. And so when God made a promise to him. To make his descendants more numerous than the stars of the sky. Did God start off by giving him a bunch of kids? No. What did he start off by doing? He started off by changing his name. Do you know what God changed his name to? Abraham. You know what Abraham means?

A father of many. Isn't that great? Can you imagine going back and he's like. Sarah's like so what did he do? Like what did God say? He goes he changed my name. What did he change your name to? Abraham. Doesn't make sense. We don't have any kids. We don't have any kids. But okay whatever. Right? Because God named him not for who he was. But for who by God's grace.

He would become. So we are his workmanship. And notice what it says next. The second thing I want you to take note of is that we have been created in Christ Jesus. Created in Christ Jesus. We have been created by him. And made a spiritual creature by him. A partner. Apart from our union with him. It would never take place. Apart from our union with him. It would never take place.

I want you to write a scripture down. You don't need to turn there. I just want you to write it down. Maybe in the margin of your Bible right there. Second Corinthians 5. 17. Second Corinthians chapter 5. Verse 17. It says that we know. That I better read it to you so I don't screw it up. Let me just read it to you. Let me just read it to you real quick. The old memory just doesn't do what it wants to sometimes.

It says therefore if anyone is in Christ. He is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold all things. Have become new. And that's who you are. You've been created in Christ. What does that mean? It means you have been made a new creation. In Christ Jesus. Totally his work. But that's who you are. But as you are his workmanship. Created in Christ Jesus.

You were created in Christ Jesus for a purpose. Because this is the balance of the gospel. And this is what a lot of people miss. You've been created in Christ Jesus. For good works. For good works. Now I would imagine that you're sitting there going. Ryan. You just said no work. We can't do a work to earn anything. Man I love the way Believer's Bible Commentary put this.

I love these pithy little sayings. Notice what he said. He said. Good works are not the root. But the fruit. Isn't that great? Good works are not the root. They are the fruit. Somebody says. Well good works are a part of being a Christian. Yeah. It's what is naturally produced in our lives. You don't have anything to do with it. And I'll get to that in just a moment.

Because it is all his work. We are his workmanship. Created in Christ Jesus. For the purpose of doing good works. Now that means something. That means that. Each of you has a calling on your life. And I say this all the time. Only because it's important. If you've been born again. You're in ministry. Some of you just aren't living out your ministries yet. Because no one.

That's a believer in Jesus Christ. Is intended simply to warm a chair. We don't have pews in here. No one is intended just to fill a chair. You did not get saved. So that we could fill up this church. You got saved. So that we could fill up the kingdom. Because that's the goal. Right? So you have been. Already. Called to good works. You say. Ryan. You told me I don't have anything to give.

You don't. Notice what it says next. Which God. Prepared. Beforehand. Which God prepared beforehand. I love this. Because it says. It means that each of us has a path to walk. That God has already provided. I was thinking about this yesterday. And I thought. You know. God provides. The means. God provides the. Motive. And God provides the. Opportunity. He gives me the strength.

He gives me the desire. He gives me the opportunity. What do I do? I show up. Right? That's all I got to do. I was thinking about some illustrations of this. And so I thought of a couple of them. And since there's not any. Well. We do have a couple kids in here. So first of all. Kids. Do you remember when you were little? And you went to help your parents. Help your parents with a project.

Maybe your folks were like painting the living room. Or something. Right? That I'm a help. I can do it my own big girl self. Right? And so you went. And you asked your parents if you could help. And they gave you a paintbrush. You proceeded to paint your body. Because that's how it worked. Right? You got paint all over yourself. You didn't do anything that was helpful.

Actually your parents had to come in and correct everything that you did. But what did you say when you were done? I painted the living room. Right? And your parents are like. They helped. They sure did. Right? They provided you the means. They provided you the motive. They provided you the opportunity. You just showed up. They took care of everything else.

Cleaned up your messes. Right? That's kind of what God does with us. That's him preparing beforehand the good works that we can walk in. But fellas, this is the best illustration I can come up with. Right? Okay, so follow me here guys. Y'all remember last Christmas? Right? What happened last Christmas? You gave gifts to people. Kind of. Right? Now, I bet the same thing happened.

It happened in my house. On Christmas morning, there were a bunch of gifts under the tree. And all of those gifts were very well wrapped. And they had a specific little sticker on them. Do you know what that sticker said? To so-and-so from either mom and dad, or it had your last name, or your first, everybody's first name's on there. But your name was on the gift.

The only problem is, you didn't shop for the gift. You didn't purchase the gift. You didn't wrap the gift. You didn't even know who you were supposed to buy for. And yet, your name was on the gift. Your name went on it. Right? All you had to do was show up. And then the kids go, Dad, thank you so much. And you're like, I knew you'd love it. Right? You just had to show up.

Everything else was taken care of for you by your wife. Wives, am I right? No, this isn't a lie. That's how it happens in my house. About 99.95% of the rest of you, that's how it happened with you too. And that's what God does with us. He buys the gift. He wraps the gift. He puts the name on the gift. All you do? Show up. Because they are good. Good works that are prepared beforehand.

And all you have to do is walk in them. All you have to do is walk in them. And that's the fifth thing there. That we should walk in them. As we have defined and described before, the word walk simply means to order our life. So we order our lives in submission to him. When he says go, we go. When he says go, we go. When he says stop, we stop. When he says talk, we talk.

And then he tells us what to say. He does everything for us. We just simply walk in the good things that he has for us. I was thinking about this in regards to my own personal job as a pastor and as a Bible teacher. And, you know, I remember when I was in Bible college thinking to myself, how does a pastor come up with a sermon every single Sunday? Like, that dude must be smart.

That dude must be smart. That guy must. He really is a sharp guy to be able to come up with something new to say every Sunday morning. Only now I know the secret. I'm going to share the secret with you. It's what God does with us. Right? I do the study. I put the time in. But ultimately, God is the one who gives me everything that I give to you. Otherwise, I'm just going to stand up here and go, uh, yeah, right?

Bible. Right? That's what I would do if it was up to me. Because I couldn't come up with it on my own. Matter of fact, this study is a perfect example. I studied for two or three days on this. And finally, last night, I said, you know what I ought to do? I ought to pray about this. And so I said, Lord Jesus, I just need your help. I need a lot of help with this because there's a lot here.

And I don't know how to put it together in a neat little package to give to the people. And so as I'm sitting there studying along and I'm reading and I'm studying, it's like God goes and lays it out. And I'm like, you can ask my wife. I always go into the living room. I'm like, she's like, how? How you doing? I'm like, I'm good. She's like, what? How's your studying going?

I'm like, I finally got the outline together. I know the flow of how it's supposed to go. She's like, I can tell. Because I'm stressing about it. But it's all God's work, right? We stress about so many things and it's his work. All we have to do is walk. All we have to do is show up. So I want to close with this. And I think I had him put it up there. I hope I haven't put it up there.

If not, listen closely. I want to leave you with this one line. It's all his work. We just need to surrender. It's all his work. We just need to surrender. Listen, it's his work of salvation. It's his work of sanctification. It's his work to call us. It's his work to save us. It's his work to empower us. And it's his work to provide all of the good works that he has provided for us to walk in.

Listen, all you have to do. Just surrender. And once you're willing to surrender to what God has for you in salvation, once you're willing to surrender to what God has for you in sanctification, and once you're willing to surrender to what God has for you and the good works that you walk in, man, there's no joy that matches it on this earth. Amen? Let's all stand.

Father, we come to you. And I thank you, Lord, for your word. Lord, I thank you for your grace that is so much greater than all of us. Lord, I thank you for all of our sin. Lord, for your grace that is so powerful, that is so amazing. And Lord, I thank you for the salvation that you've provided for each of us. So Lord, may we just simply surrender to you. May we be the people that you've called for us to be

as we rest in the work that you have done for us. Father, we thank you and we praise you. In Jesus' name, amen. Be blessed. Have everlasting life. For God so, so loved the world. Whosoever would believe in us, in him, to him. For God so loved the world.

Whosoever would believe in us, have everlasting life. For God so loved the world. Rely on him, to him. Put your trust in him,

in your heart to him. For God so loved the world. Have everlasting life. For God so loved the world. For God so loved the world.
