Exodus 39:32–40:38

chapter 39 Exodus 39 Tonight we'll finish up the book of Exodus We've kind of labored through the tabernacle just a little bit here but tonight we not only see Moses approve the articles of the tabernacle that have been constructed but then also the actual putting together of the tabernacle and then the presence of God come down on the tabernacle So we pick up in chapter 39 verse 32 and it says this Thus all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting was completed The sons of Israel did according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses So they did They brought the tabernacle to Moses The tent and all its furnishings its clasps its boards its bars its pillars and its sockets the covering of ram's skins dyed red the covering of porpoise skins

and the screening veil the ark of the testimony and its poles and the mercy seat the table and all its utensils and the bread of the presence the pure gold of the lampstands with its arrangement of lamps and all its utensils and the oil for the light the gold altar and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense and the veil for the doorway of the tent the bronze altar and its grating its poles all its utensils the laver and its stands the hangings of the court its pillars its socket and the screen for the gate of the court its cords and its pegs and all the equipment for the service of the tabernacle for the tent of meeting the woven garments for ministering in the holy place and the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons

to minister as priests So the sons of Israel did according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses and Moses examined the work and behold they had done it just as the Lord had commanded this they did so Moses blessed them so the sons of Israel come before Moses they've constructed all of the things that they need to all of the things that we will not go back and talk about again until we move into chapter 40 and then we'll talk about it again all of those things that they needed to construct they then presented those to Moses and Moses examined them because remember Moses was the one who was originally given the instructions on the mountain and as they presented it to Moses and he looked it all over to make sure it was exactly as God had said

because remember God had told Moses build everything exactly like I tell you to build it he looked at everything that they had done and he said you did it just like God wanted for you to and so he put his blessing on it now I was thinking about this and of course with everything that I teach I want to make sure I can apply it somehow to our lives and the Lord gave me something on this and I think it's kind of interesting to pay attention to each of us as believers in Jesus Christ as a servant of the living God and though we've not been tasked with the building of the tabernacle we have been tasked with serving him not only with the ministries that God has given to each of us because I believe that if you're a believer in Jesus Christ

you have a ministry they all look a little bit different but everybody has a ministry so not only with the ministries that he's given us but also with the lives that we lead that those lives should always be able to be examined by those that are around us to tell whether or not we're living the life that God has called for us to live because God has given us instructions in his word God has told us what our ministries are supposed to look like and God has told us what our lives are supposed to look like the type of fruit that our lives are supposed to be producing and I believe that our lives should be able to stand up underneath of examination now in the world we live in today most of us don't like that idea we don't like the idea that someone might

take a look at the life that we're living and tell us whether or not we're doing it according to what the word of God has to say but if we're being completely honest with ourselves I think the best thing that we could do is to have our lives examined by the people that are around us to have them inspect our fruit and make sure that the fruit that's being produced in our lives is just as the Lord commanded I think the moment we decide that the fruit that our lives are producing shouldn't be inspected by the people around us is probably the moment when the fruit that our lives are producing isn't good any longer it needs to be inspected anyway and so that's exactly what Moses does with the people and of course he's able to say everything that you did

that's exactly as God had commanded it to be done you've done a wonderful job now it's time for the building of the tabernacle and so it says in chapter 40 verse 1 then the Lord spoke to Moses saying on the first day of the first month you shall set up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting you shall place the ark of the testimony there and you shall screen the ark with the veil you shall bring in the table and arrange what belongs on it and you shall bring in the lampstand and mount its lamps moreover you shall set the gold altar of incense before the ark of the testimony and set up the veil for the doorway to the tabernacle you shall set the altar of burnt offering in front of the doorway of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting and you shall set

the labor between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it you shall set up the court all around and hang up the veil for the gateway of the court so God's going to give him instructions now on how he wants him to put the tabernacle together now that he has all of these pieces he has this great big puzzle and God tells him exactly how to put it together the first thing I want you to take note of though is when he's supposed to do this because it says the Lord spoke to Moses verse 1 of chapter 40 saying on the first day of the first month you shall set up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting now that's what we call a time stamp what we're told here is that we're now one year give or take a couple of weeks one year from when the children

of Israel were delivered from Egypt now that's a long time that's a long time for them to be hanging out at the base of Mount Sinai if you remember the first three months they spent trying to get to Mount Sinai that was the crossing of the Red Sea their time of wandering in the wilderness their time of the manna and then the water from the rock and all the different things that took place that was the first three months and then they got to Mount Sinai and then Moses was up on the mountain for 80 days would have been 40 had they done it right the first time it ended up being 80 days that he's up on the mountain so that's quite a bit of time about six and a half months at that point in time and it's going to be the rest of the amount

of time that they spend building the tabernacle so it took them roughly six months to build the tabernacle that's quite a good amount of time that they spent building this tabernacle and quite an amount of time that they've spent leaving the land of Egypt now anytime God puts a time stamp on something I think it's kind of interesting to think I wonder how much they were able to look back and realize how much they'd grown over that past year think about it as they're putting the tabernacle together probably each person had their job each individual was given their job Moses couldn't have done it all by himself and so as they're putting this tabernacle together thinking about what that last year had held for them imagine thinking back on that last year

of their life thinking about the really good times of God delivering them from the land of Egypt and how amazing that was that God brought them out of the land of Egypt how amazing it was that God provided bread for them in the wilderness how amazing it was that God provided water from the rock how amazing it was that he parted the Red Sea and that they saw him descend in the cloud on the mountain and all of the really cool things that they saw and they thought back and they thought about all those happy times but also when they thought back they had to think back on some of the we'll call them not so happy times the times of them complaining while they were in Egypt because while they were in Egypt though God was in the process of setting them free

it didn't quite happen like they thought it was going to and they kind of questioned whether or not they were ever actually going to get set free from the land of Egypt as a matter of fact they told Moses why'd you even show up it was better before you got here over that last year they ended up being stuck between the Egyptian army and the Red Sea and they looked at Moses and they said why'd you bring us out here to die and then they were really hungry in the wilderness and they looked at Moses and they said why'd you bring us out here just to die and then they got really thirsty in the wilderness and they looked at Moses and they said I think you've guessed it now why'd you bring us out here just to die and then Moses is up on the mountain

receiving the law from God and those tablets of the Ten Commandments and they decide that guy's never coming back he probably died let's build a calf we'll build ourselves a God and that'll be the one that we'll serve and that'll lead us through the wilderness there were some really bad times the interesting thing is that when we look back on our lives we can oftentimes see some really really good times and we can see some really really bad times but no matter how much of each of those that we see one thing always remains the same and it's the same thing that remained the same for the children of Israel is that over that year God remained faithful because they were all still there they were all still together as the nation of Israel God had still

made the promise to be with them God had still given them the law God had still blessed them with the ability for his presence to be among them which we'll see at the end of chapter 40 you see God remained faithful through the entire thing and they could chart their growth based not only upon the failures they'd made the victories they'd seen and the faithfulness of God perhaps you've experienced that over the last year or so you can look back over your last year and you can see man there were some really good times that happened there's been some really fun things that have happened but at the same time there's been some really hard things that have happened but I think you much like the children of Israel can say no matter what happened

over this last year God has remained faithful and you can chart your growth by how much you can realize how faithful God was whether things were good or whether things were bad so it's one year later and now it's time to build their tabernacle and of course he gives them the instructions even on how to put it together notice again I think it's kind of interesting that he starts with the arc of the testimony right there and because if it doesn't start in the heart then nothing on the outside can ever be the same well then we look at verse 9 and it says then you shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it and shall consecrate it and all its furnishings and it shall be holy and you shall anoint

the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils and consecrate the altar and the altar shall be most holy you shall anoint the laver and its stand and consecrate it then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the doorway of the tent of meeting and wash them with water you shall put the holy garments on Aaron and anoint him and consecrate him that he may minister to me as priest you shall bring his sons and put them and put tunics on them and you shall anoint them even as you have anointed their father that they may minister as priests to me and their anointing will qualify them for a perpetual priesthood throughout their generation and so we see not only the consecration of the tabernacle and all the articles of the tabernacle

but also the consecration of the high priest and his sons that would serve alongside him because this was not just to be some average tent that anybody could show up to anytime they wanted this was not just some average group of men these men were set apart under God and this tabernacle was set apart under God now that begs the question this is about the third or fourth time now that we've read through not only all of the implements of the ark of the covenant we've seen or of the tabernacle the third or fourth time we've seen the specific instructions on the not only construction but the putting together of these articles the consecration of the articles the high priest the high priest garments God has spent an incredible amount of time

in the book of Exodus talking about this and so it begs the question what is so significant about this tabernacle we are reminded that the tabernacle is an earthly model of a heavenly reality David Guzik in his commentary I'm just going to read you exactly what he wrote because it was really good said this since Moses was instructed to build and arrange everything according to a pattern it isn't surprising that we see elements of this tabernacle arrangement in the Bible's descriptions of heaven and he gives us several verses we're not going to turn there I want you to write these down if you have time I think I've put them up here write them down if you have time I'm just going to reference what it says in Revelation chapter 4 verses 1 through 6

the ark of the covenant which of course represents the throne room of God is referenced as well as the lampstand and the laver that all correspond to a heavenly reality in Revelation chapter 8 verses 2 through 4 we see the altar of incense in heaven is mentioned in Isaiah chapter 6 verses 1 through 7 we see the tabernacle structure is implied by the mentioning of the temple and the brazen altar is described and then in Hebrews chapter 9 verses 23 through 24 it tells us that at some point in time after the cross Jesus entered the heavenly reality represented on earth by the tabernacle and appeared in the presence of God to offer a perfect atonement for our sins therefore every time before this event when the high priest made atonement

in the earthly tabernacle it was play acting and looking forward to the perfect atonement that the son of God would offer you see everything about the tabernacle was an earthly model of a very heavenly reality that's why God was so specific and spent so much time talking about how it was possible to be together that's why how it was supposed to be put together that's why when Moses gave the instructions it had to be done exactly as God told them to do it because you don't want to mess with the earthly model of the heavenly reality and so as we look at this tabernacle and it's set up we're reminded that it speaks to us of very heavenly things and so that's why he spends so much time talking about it well now it's time for Moses to put the tabernacle

together and so we look at verse 16 and it says this thus Moses did according to all that the Lord had commanded him so he did now in the first month of the second year on the first day of the month the tabernacle was erected Moses built the tabernacle and laid its sockets and set up its boards and inserted its bars and built its pillars he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering on the tent of the tent on top of it just as the Lord had commanded Moses then he took the testimony and put it into the ark and he attached the poles to the ark and he put the mercy seat on top of the ark he brought the ark into the tabernacle and set up a veil for the screen and screened off the ark of the testimony just as the Lord had commanded Moses

then he put the table in the tent of meeting on the north side of the tabernacle outside the veil he set the arrangement of bread in order on it before the Lord just as the Lord had commanded Moses then he placed the lampstand in the tent of meeting opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle he lighted the lamps before the Lord just as the Lord had commanded Moses then he placed the gold altar in the tent of meeting in front of the veil and he burned fragrant incense on it just as the Lord had commanded Moses then he set up the veil for the doorway of the tabernacle he set the altar He placed the labor between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it for washing.

From it, Moses, Aaron, and his sons washed their hands and their feet. When they entered the tent of meeting and when they approached the altar, they washed just as the Lord had commanded Moses. And he erected the court all around the tabernacle and the altar, and he hung up the veil for the gateway of the court. Thus, Moses finished the work. Now, we won't go into detail again about all of the implements.

We don't need to. We've done that quite a few times. There's one main thing I want to point out to you about this section. Perhaps you noticed I tried to put a little emphasis on the phrase that was repeated over and over again. And that's that it was done just as the Lord commanded Moses. Eight times in that section is that phrase used. That God did it just as the Lord commanded Moses.

Now, why would God have taken all of that time to make sure that we know that that's exactly how Moses did it? Well, of course, we know that that's what God told him to do. And Moses, because he was obedient, did it that way. But why is it important for us to pay attention to that? Why is it important for us to pay attention to the fact that Moses did that?

Moses obeyed God completely. He obeyed God completely in the way that he built all of these things. Well, I think there's three reasons why it's important for us to pay attention to that. Number one, we are often tempted to take away from God's word. Have you ever noticed that? Now, typically, what we do in a church that teaches the Bible is we accuse everybody else of taking away from God's word.

We say, oh, you know, those other churches, those really liberal churches, they like to take away from what God's word has to say. But you see, I'm not talking about those other churches tonight. I'm talking about us tonight. Us, as Christians, we have a tendency to take away from what God's word has to say. We have a tendency to only highlight the parts that we like in God's word and sort of skip over the parts that we don't like.

And I know what you're thinking. No, I don't. And you know what I'm thinking? Yes, you do. You know how I know that? Because I do. We have a tendency to want to do that. And so when we read these words about Moses, that Moses did exactly as the Lord had commanded him, it should be a reminder for us. We can't take away from God's word. We can't take out the parts that offend us.

We can't take out the parts that we don't like. And may I say, we can't take out the parts that are really hard for us or that make us a little bit angry. I don't know about you, but I find certain parts of God's word hard to take in. There are parts of scripture that I go, I struggle with that one. Not only because I'm not always good at obeying it, but there's certain parts of scripture that I go, I struggle with that one.

There are certain things that I have a hard time with. I have a list of some verses that I have questions about. But I can't take those away just because I don't like them. I can't take those away just because I have questions about them. I still have to do what God's word has to say. But you know what else? Not only is all of God's word true for me, but sometimes God speaks specifically to me about things.

And when God speaks specifically to me about things, you know what I can't do? Take part of it away. I can't say, okay, I can do the first thing, but not the second thing. I can do the first part, God, because the first part's within my realm of action. I can do that. But that second part you just asked me to do, I don't think I can do that. Meanwhile, God's like, blessings await you if you'll simply obey.

I believe we need to pay attention to it because it is our temptation and our tendency to take away from God's word. Number two. Number two, I think that the repeating of those phrases are important because we are oftentimes tempted to add to God's word. Have you ever found yourself doing that? If God says go this far, well, then going that far may be a little bit better.

Or we maybe make up rules that God has that don't really exist in the Bible. Sometimes we add extra conditions to things that God never intended or we make life harder on somebody else than God actually intended for it to be. You see, this is what the Pharisees, the Pharisees did, right? And none of us like the Pharisees because they're Pharisees, right? None of us want to be those.

And yet, sometimes as Christians, we can have a tendency to add to what God's word has to say. It's usually some kind of a law in our life. It's usually some sort of an extra thing that we think we need to do or that we think somebody else needs to do because it's an important thing to us. And we can have a tendency to add to what God's word has to say. But we see right here, Moses can't add to anything that God told him to do at the tabernacle.

You see, I can just imagine now that if Bezalel was this really artistic guy, which I can imagine that he wasn't, as he's building some aspect of the tabernacle, as he's building some aspect of one of the implements within the tabernacle, he might have thought to himself, gosh, adding a little artistic flair to this would be really good. You know what would really make this look better? And you know what Moses would have to say? I don't care what you think would make it look better.

This is what you need to do. I don't care what you think would add a little flair to it. This is what you need to do.

Sometimes we can do that. With God's word, we can say, but if we add this to it, it'll make it a little bit better. That's not what we need to do. So I think it's important for us to pay attention to this because we can have a tendency to add to God's word. And then the last thing, why I think it's important, is that we can sometimes be tempted to get bored with God's word.

We can sometimes be tempted to get bored with God's word. What do I mean by that? Well, first of all, within the church culture in general, there's this tendency for us to be a little bit bored with God's word. That's why with the emergent church movement that came out, they started thinking, well, God's word isn't as important as it used to be. We should go back and start doing some of the things that they did

in the second and third century because they really got spiritual and they kind of added to God's word a little bit. And they get bored with what God's word has to say because after all, is it really inerrant? Is it really the infallible word of God? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But either way you look at it, it gets a little bit boring. And sometimes we get bored with what God's word has to say

because over familiarity, all those different kinds of things. But the other thing that can happen to us, which is probably more likely to happen to people in this church than doing that sort of thing is, is it sounds really exciting to obey God in the beginning, right? We've all sat in the church service or in the Bible study or gone to the conference or the retreat, and you hear what God has to say. As a matter of fact, you could probably specifically say, God spoke this to me.

This is what I took away from this conference. This is what I took away from this church service. This is what I took away from my devotions. And it sounded great that weekend. It sounded great at 6.30 in the morning when you were reading that and you were journaling about it and you were praying about it. But then you have to put it into action. And day one went great.

Day two was okay. But by day 14, you're kind of like, do I really have to keep doing this? Do I really? This is boring. It's boring. It's boring. Do I really have to obey like this all the time? And sometimes we get bored with it and kind of forget that God told us two or three, four or five, six weeks ago that this is the way he wanted us to live our lives.

And so we end up not obeying in the way God wants for us to because it sounded fun in the beginning, but then when the commitment had to kick in, that's when it was really hard. When the sacrifice had to kick in, that's when it got really difficult. Could have been a little bit boring for them, to have to remember every single thing. Well, did you look and see what God said to do about it?

Oh my gosh. Do we have to go back to the God blueprint every time? Yeah, you do. And so it reminds me of what we really need to do. Number one, we need to listen for God's commands. Number two, we need to obey them fully. Oftentimes listening for God's commands is not our problem. Sometimes it is because we live in a busy culture and sometimes it's hard for us to listen to what God has to say.

But I would bet in general, listening for God's plan is not your problem. Listening for God's command is not your problem. Because I don't think you're that much different than me. Listening to God's commands is not usually my problem. It's the follow through that's hard. It's the living obediently that's really hard. But you know what? When we do things as the Lord commanded,

we come to places like verse 34 that we're going to get to in just a minute and we see the benefits of obedience. And so now we move into the section that... We'll spend the rest of our evening talking about the glory of the Lord filling the tabernacle. Verse 34. Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting

because the cloud had settled on it. And the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel, would set out. If the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day when it was taken up. For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day

and there was fire in it by night in the sight of all the house of Israel. For what I think is probably one of the more incredible scenes that were given in scripture, it's given very few verses. Do you agree? I feel like this deserves more writing. This deserves more description. I want to see this in replay. So let's break it down just a little bit. So the first thing that we see

is we see that the cloud covered the tent of meeting. Moses has everything built, everything set up. He did everything just like the Lord commanded. And the first thing that we see is we see the cloud covered the tabernacle. Now, here's the really cool thing to point out. The obedience of the children of Israel, the obedience of Moses did not earn the presence of God

because we can never earn the presence of God. The obedience of the children of Israel welcomed the presence of God. The obedience of the children of Israel welcomed that presence because it created a natural flow for the presence of God to come into that place. Here's the thing. We can't earn God's presence in our life. We can't earn God's blessing on our life,

but we can welcome the blessing. And I believe also that we can cut off the blessing. Disobedience, living in sin, cuts off the blessing from our life. I agree that we're not originally I've always used the example of my cellular device. When I first got a smartphone way back when, like 10 years ago now, right? It's forever ago. I was scrolling through something on my smartphone

and in one hand I was holding a cup of tea. It was about this time of the year. I only drink tea for one reason and that's when I'm sick. When I get a cold, I drink hot tea with honey and lemon because the hot tea feels really good. I always describe it like this. The hot tea feels good, the lemon breaks up the junk and the honey smooths it down, right? That's how I feel about a good cup of hot tea.

So I'm sitting there allowing the lemon to break up the junk and the honey to smooth it down and as I'm scrolling through probably the Facebook machine, undoubtedly is what I was scrolling through, clumsy as I am, I drop my phone in my cup of tea. Now listen, there's a lot worse places you can drop your phone. I've seen it happen. I'll just leave it at that.

There's a lot worse places you can drop your phone. Now I dropped it in the tea and I was like, son of a gun, I dropped my phone in my tea. That's not good. So I was like, I would look up what to do with this but I dropped my phone in my tea. I can't. So my wife says, hey, you need to put that thing in a bag of rice. So I put it in a bag of rice and eventually it worked-ish.

About as well as I do, it kind of worked. But anyway, that's not the point of the story. The point of the story is this. I still owned the phone. I still had the plan for the phone but the phone didn't work. Why didn't the phone work? Because something had cut off the communication. You see, when we sin, it's kind of like dropping the phone in the cup of tea.

We're still gods. He still has a plan. We've just cut off the ability for him to bless us. We've just cut off the ability for him to use us until it gets dealt with. Until God, who has the best bag of rice known to man, is able to deal with that sin. And so the children of Israel had done everything the way that they were supposed to and so it didn't earn God's blessing.

It didn't earn God's presence but it did welcome God's presence because that's exactly what this cloud is. This cloud was the visible representation of the presence of God. It's an amazing scene, right? You can picture the little fence going all around the tabernacle with the tabernacle right there in the middle and as they've set it up and everything's going on, all of a sudden this cloud begins to settle on the tabernacle and they can see that it's sunny everywhere else except right where that cloud is because that cloud has settled down on the tabernacle and that cloud undoubtedly told them at that moment, God is with us.

You see, that cloud, that visible representation of the presence of God was so key for the children of Israel. Because remember what Moses had prayed? Moses had prayed, Lord, if you don't go with us, then don't let us go because if you don't go with us, then what's the point? If you don't go with us, then we may as well not go. Well, what this is, is first of all,

this is a fulfillment of the promise that God made in Exodus 29, verse 45. Let me make sure I said that correctly. Yeah, turn back to Exodus 29, 45 real quick.

Notice what it says. In Exodus 29, verse 45, he says, He says, It was a fulfillment of this promise. You see, why did God bring them out of the nation of Egypt? We were told he brought them out of the nation of Egypt so that he could dwell among them. And he made them a promise. I will dwell among you because I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt

that I can dwell among you. You see, the tabernacle was to be set up in the center of the camp. Why? Because at the center of the camp was God because at the heart of the nation was supposed to be the presence of God. So when they constructed the tabernacle, exactly as God commanded it, welcomed that presence of God in which he fulfilled the promise that he made.

I don't know about you, but I always love to take note of when God keeps his promises because even though I know he's faithful, it's good to be reminded that he's faithful. But not only is it the fulfillment of the promise that God made, but it was the answer to Moses' prayer. Look over at Exodus chapter 33, verse 14.

Actually, start in verse 13. Exodus 33, verse 13. Now, therefore, I pray you, if I have found favor in your sight, let me know your ways so that I may find, that I may know you so that I may find favor in your sight. Consider, too, that this nation is your people. Verse 14. Verse 14, and he said, my presence shall go with you and I will give you rest. You see, when that cloud settled down

over the tabernacle, Moses had the perfect picture of the fact that God answers prayer because it was the answer to the prayer that God had. I was just having a conversation with somebody about this right before the service. He said, don't give up praying because God answers prayers. And I said, that's absolutely true. God answers our prayers. And this is the perfect picture of the fact

that this is what God did for the nation of Israel. He answered Moses' prayer because Moses said, God, if you don't go, we can't go. And then God dwelt among them in the presence of this cloud. Well, that wasn't the only thing that happened. Look at verse 35. Or excuse me, the end of verse 34. And the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting

because the cloud had settled on it and the glory of the Lord had filled it. Filled the tabernacle. The glory of the Lord fills the tabernacle and it's so thick. The presence of God was so thick that Moses could not enter the tabernacle. Now, I don't know if you ever thought about this, but do you remember the last time Moses had a serious encounter with God?

He said, Lord, show me your glory. And God said, no one can see my face and live, but here's what I'll do. Hide yourself in the cleft of the rock. I'll cover you with my hand. When I've passed by, I'll remove my hand and you can see the back of my hand. You can see the backside of my glory. This is the same Moses. The same Moses who saw the backside of the glory of God,

who saw things about God that no one else has ever seen before, but the presence of God was so thick that he couldn't go in there. Can you imagine what that's like? This is what I'm saying. There's not nearly enough description here. I want to know exactly what took place. Were there colors involved? How thick was the smoke in there? I want to know more about what happened.
